“Speak to the overseer” is the objective that gates the back half of The Firebrand, the side quest that leads to imprisoned miller Mert at Stoneward Post. The overseer is a named guard captain, Friedo, and he will not open the prison door until you give him something he wants. There are three separate ways to get that door open, and only one of them costs you money.
Quick answer: Get inside Stoneward Post by talking your way past the gate guard, then walk straight through the fort’s inner gates to the stone tower at the back and enter the doorway. Friedo is inside. Pay him 300 Denarii, beat Cerbus for him, or confront him about his cut of the stolen prisoner goods, and he unlocks the cells for one time segment.
Get past the Stoneward Post gate guard first
You cannot reach Friedo until you are admitted to the fort. Approach during the day and the guard at the outer gate asks what your business is. Every reply he offers gets you inside, so the only thing that changes is whether you keep your weapon.
| Reply to the Post Guard | Result |
|---|---|
| I’m here to visit a prisoner. | Admitted; weapons confiscated at the gate |
| I have a message for the commander of this post. | Admitted; weapons confiscated at the gate |
| I… I want to enlist! | Admitted; follow with “What? A soldier without a weapon?” to keep your blade |
Arriving at night is a different quest entirely. The guards turn hostile on sight, so you fight your way in and end up brawling the two soldiers in the tower plus the one down in the dungeon. The trade-off is that Coen keeps his vampire abilities after dark even with no sword, which some players prefer if they intend to break Mert out anyway.

Three ways to make Friedo unlock the cells
Friedo wants payment, a favor, or silence. All three routes end with the same unlock, so pick whichever costs you least.
| Method | What it costs | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| Bribe (“A bribe it is.”) | 300 Denarii | Enough coin on hand |
| Fight Cerbus | One duel | Ask “Is there another way I could persuade you?”, then win and pass on Friedo’s regards |
| Blackmail over stolen goods | Nothing | Talk to the angry woman outside, then press Yenno |
Note: Friedo mentions his black eye when you ask for another way to persuade him. Cerbus gave it to him, and beating Cerbus in a fight settles the debt.
The free route: use Yenno against Friedo
How to confirm the objective completed
The moment Friedo agrees, one time segment is spent and the tracker swaps “Speak to the overseer” for “Speak with the miller.” The door leading down to the cells is now unlocked. If the clock has not moved and the door is still shut, the conversation did not resolve and you need to pick one of the three options again.
Downstairs, a guard hovers while you question Mert. Only “Officer! He’s going to be sick!” avoids a fight, and it costs two more time segments while the guard steps out. Whispering or ordering him away puts the whole camp on alert. If you plan to fight anyway, grab the Weathered Longsword in the back right corner of the room first, especially if your weapon was taken at the gate.
The four-day deadline on reaching Mert
The clock starts the moment the “Go to Stoneward Post” objective appears. You have four in-game days, 64 time segments, to speak with Mert. Miss that window and he is hanged before you arrive.
If you are late, Friedo tells you as much when you finally reach the tower and points you to the body dumped out back. The objective changes to finding and then questioning Mert’s corpse, and the quest resolves down that branch instead. Talk to him in time and tell him you will come back later, and Mert stays safe in his cell indefinitely until you return for the breakout.

Getting Friedo to open that door is the pivot point of the whole quest. Do it cheaply, keep the post calm, and you leave with Mert’s information about the manumit rendezvous southeast of the bridge, which rolls straight into Shadows in the Woods.
