Our Rotten Roots sends Coen underneath Svartrau with Lacra to dig up what Isbrand left behind. The quest tracker walks you through three stages of the same task, and the final one — “Search for the last memory” — is where players tend to stall, because the objective sits at the bottom of a long vertical descent and only clears after a second forced fight.
Quick answer: The last memory is in the second circular chamber deep in the Svartrau catacombs, past the green door. Trigger the red memory, kill every Ancient Undead that spawns, and the tracker flips to “Enter the sanctorum with Lacra.”
Where the last memory is located in Svartrau
Everything happens below ground. Lacra leads Coen out of the red-lit rocky stretch of Svartrau, into a cave tunnel behind a metal gate, then down through the city ruins into the lower catacombs. The two memory chambers are round rooms connected by a single green door, and the second one holds the final memory.
Two traversal abilities carry the whole descent. Clawride lets Coen drop down cliffs and shafts that would otherwise kill him, and Planeshift is what you use to move through the darker stretches of the tunnels. Keep the compass marker in view — the route is linear, but the lighting hides the drops.

Ancient Undead fights in both chambers
Both memory rooms are closed arenas. The enemies appear in a group rather than trickling in, so the round layout works in your favour — keep circling and pick targets off at the edge instead of standing in the middle of the chamber.

Killing the first wave unlocks a new glossary entry for the Ancient Undead. That entry is a useful checkpoint on its own: if you see the unlock notification, the first chamber is finished and the green door is your next stop.

The second wave adds hounds, which close distance far faster than the warriors. Deal with them first so you aren’t being flanked while you swing at the slower undead.

How to confirm the objective completed
The quest tracker is the confirmation. Our Rotten Roots steps through a fixed chain of objectives, and each one only advances after the matching memory has played and the room has been cleared.
| Objective text | What clears it |
|---|---|
| Search for Isbrand’s memories | Follow Lacra out of Svartrau and into the catacombs |
| Search for more of Isbrand’s memories | Trigger the first circular chamber memory and kill the Ancient Undead |
| Search for the last memory | Trigger the second chamber memory and clear the warriors and hounds |
| Enter the sanctorum with Lacra | Descend deeper through the red-lit ruins to the central altar platform |
If the tracker still reads “Search for the last memory” after a fight, something in the chamber is alive. The objective does not advance on the memory playback alone — the room has to be empty.
Getting into the sanctorum after the last memory
Once the objective updates, follow Lacra deeper through the red-lit ruins. The final move is another Clawride drop onto the central altar platform, which ends the segment.
Note: this whole stretch burns time against the 30-day countdown to Brencis’s coronation, so plan the descent for a night you can spare rather than squeezing it in beside other Court work.
Why Our Rotten Roots matters for Lacra’s ending
Our Rotten Roots is the last entry in Lacra’s questline, following A Friend Like This, Song of the Mountain, and Hive and Seek. Finishing it makes Midnight Reckoning available, which is the mission that brings Lacra with you to Greifberg Castle.
That matters if you’re chasing a specific outcome. Beating Brencis alongside Lacra during Midnight Reckoning gives you The Patricide, one of the game’s good endings, and it’s off the table entirely if the memory hunt under Svartrau goes unfinished. Skipping past it now means the only routes left are storming the castle alone or lining up Crake’s questline instead.
