The Missing Scholar is a multi-part questline that starts in the village of Valanaar and ends deep inside a bird-infested cave called the Shreikling Den. It runs in four connected stages, and each one hands you the next objective on the spot, so there is no running back to the original quest giver between steps.
Quick answer: Loot the Bloodstained Satchel northwest of Valanaar in the Gustberry Lowlands, carry Fillion Flamebreeze out of the Shreikling Den to the bedroll, then go back in and loot the Shreikling Matriarch’s Head.

Every stage takes place in the same small stretch of countryside between Valanaar and the cave, so the whole chain is a short loop rather than a cross-zone trek. The enemies along the way are low-level field mobs, including Shreikling Fledglings near the cave mouth and Grown Lashtails in the open grass.

Accept the quest from the NPC inside the village building and head back out to the street. The cobblestone path outside leads straight toward the village gate.

Open your Map & Quest Log and look at the marker for The Missing Scholar. The objective sits outside the village along the main road, in the open fields of the Gustberry Lowlands to the northwest.

Run the road out through the arched gateway and across the wooden bridge, then keep following it until the paving gives way to grass. Falaath Village and the Shreikling Den both sit off this same route, which is useful for orienting yourself.

Turn off the road into the open field when the quest markers appear, clearing any wildlife that aggros on the way in. You are looking for a small abandoned camp.
At the camp, interact with the Bloodstained Satchel on the ground. Doing so finishes the first stage, grants the quest reward, and immediately presents the follow-up objective.
From the camp, head for the cave entrance nearby. Shreikling Fledglings patrol the approach and will pull as you get close, so clear them before you commit to the entrance.
Enter the Shreikling Den and follow the winding paths downward. The cave branches, and Fillion is not near the entrance — keep descending through the tunnels rather than doubling back at the first dead end.
Look for Fillion Flamebreeze lying injured on the cave floor. Click him and choose the option to pick him up and carry him.
Clear the mobs along your exit route before you pick Fillion up. It is far easier than fighting your way out while carrying him.
Carrying Fillion Flamebreeze out to the bedroll
Carrying Fillion slows your movement speed, which turns the walk out of the cave into the slowest part of the chain. Steer wide of enemy patrol paths instead of trying to outrun them.
Talk to Fillion once he is on the bedroll to turn the stage in. He then offers the final objective, which asks you to slay the matriarch and collect the Shreikling Matriarch’s Head (0/1).
Kill her and loot the Shreikling Matriarch’s Head from her corpse. Other players are usually working the same objective at the pool, so inviting one to your party is an easy way to speed up the kill and the respawn wait.
The satchel stage closes the moment you click the Bloodstained Satchel and the reward window appears.
The rescue stage only completes after Fillion is placed on the bedroll and you speak to him — carrying him out of the cave alone is not enough.
The final stage is done when Shreikling Matriarch’s Head reads 1/1 in your quest log after looting her body.
The Missing Scholar in Korthia is a different quest
A level 60 quest with the same name exists in Korthia, added in patch 9.1.0 during Shadowlands. It is picked up from Tal-Galan, asks you to locate Scholar Roh-Suir, and hands out the Archivists’ Progress effect along with 2 gold 57 silver 40 copper. That one is part of The Archivists’ Codex chain and has nothing to do with Fillion Flamebreeze, the Gustberry Lowlands, or the Shreikling Den — if your objective text mentions Roh-Suir, you are on the Korthia version instead.
