Where to find Meven Korgal, how to loot the Scarlet Crusade Documents, and which reward to take from Executor Arren.

Where to find Meven Korgal, how to loot the Scarlet Crusade Documents, and which reward to take from Executor Arren.

The Red Messenger is a short Horde quest in Deathknell, the Forsaken starting village in Tirisfal Glades. It asks you to intercept a Scarlet Crusade courier carrying papers the Forsaken want, and the whole thing takes a couple of minutes once you know which tent the courier is standing in front of.

Quick answer: Take The Red Messenger from Executor Arren in Deathknell, kill Meven Korgal at the Scarlet Crusade camp southeast at roughly 36, 68, loot the Scarlet Crusade Documents, and hand them back to Arren.

It sits third in the Deathknell chain that runs Night Web’s Hollow, then The Scarlet Crusade, then The Red Messenger, and finally Vital Intelligence. Because the quest is sharable, a group leveling through Deathknell together can pick it up from one player and kill the target once each. The quest was removed from the live game in patch 4.0.3a and only exists in the Classic versions.

How to complete The Red Messenger

Talk to Executor Arren in Deathknell and accept The Red Messenger. He explains that a Scarlet Crusade agent was sent from the Scarlet Monastery and is carrying something the Forsaken want, and your log updates with a single objective for the Scarlet Crusade Documents.

Leave Deathknell through the gate and run southeast along the path through the woods. You are heading back to the same Scarlet Crusade encampment used for the earlier Scarlet Armband quest, so the route will already be familiar if you did the chain in order.
Find Meven Korgal at roughly 36, 68. Nothing in his name marks him as the messenger, and he is usually standing outside the single tent nearest the village rather than in the cluster of three tents in the main camp. If he is not there, he has recently been killed by another player, so wait a short while for the respawn.

Kill him. Meven Korgal is a level 5 non-elite and dies quickly, but he often has a Scarlet Initiate and a Scarlet Convert stationed on either side of him. Clearing one of those adds first, or pulling him from the hill behind the tent so he comes to you alone, keeps the fight to a single target.

Loot the body and take the Scarlet Crusade Documents. The item drops from him every time, so one kill is always enough, and your objective flips to 1/1 the moment it lands in your bags.

Head back northwest to Deathknell and hand the documents to Executor Arren. He reads through them, dismisses most of it as old news, then finds a map of Scarlet field commanders and agents, which closes the quest out.

Rewards and reputation

You pick one of two items at turn-in:

  • Executor Staff — the caster-friendly option
  • Deathguard Buckler — the off-hand shield option
VersionExperience
Classic (original)670
Season of Mastery930
Burning Crusade Classic670

Reputation differs by version as well. Classic grants +200 reputation with Undercity, while Burning Crusade Classic grants +500. At level 5 the experience alone is usually enough to push you straight to level 6 as you hand it in.

How to confirm the quest is complete

Two things tell you it worked. The Red Messenger disappears from your quest log after Arren takes the documents, and he immediately offers the follow-up, Vital Intelligence, which is the last step of the Deathknell chain.

If you are returning to an older character and want to check whether you already finished it, paste this into the chat box:

/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(382))

A result of true means the quest is already on your account for that character. From there, accepting Vital Intelligence from Executor Arren finishes off the Scarlet Crusade thread in Deathknell and points you toward Brill and the rest of Tirisfal Glades.
