The ending where Ciri survives and becomes a Witcher is widely treated as the best conclusion to The Witcher 3, and it is also the one that lines up with her role in the wider Witcher story. It does not hinge on a single final choice. Instead, the game watches how Geralt treats Ciri across a handful of late-game moments and quietly tallies the result.
Quick answer: Make at least three of the five positive Ciri choices below and skip the visit to Emperor Emhyr. Ciri then survives the White Frost and takes up the Witcher’s path.

The five dialogue choices that decide Ciri’s fate
Five moments during the final act each add a positive or negative mark to a hidden score. The wording can shift slightly by platform or language, so match the situation as much as the exact phrase. Pick the responses that show trust in Ciri rather than control over her.
| Quest | Choose this response | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Blood on the Battlefield | “Think I know what might lift your spirits.” | Starts a snowball fight; winning or losing does not matter |
| Blood on the Battlefield | “All right, Velen it is.” | Heads to Velen instead of visiting Emhyr |
| Final Preparations | “You’ll do fine on your own.” | Lets Ciri face the Lodge of Sorceresses alone |
| Child of the Elder Blood | “Go for it.” | Lets Ciri wreck Avallac’h’s laboratory |
| Child of the Elder Blood | “Yeah. I’ll go with you.” | Visits Skjall’s grave together |
In Blood on the Battlefield, Ciri is unhappy with her progress in training following the clashes at Kaer Morhen. Suggesting something to lift her mood triggers a snowball fight and earns a positive mark. If you say she needn’t excel at everything, the two of them drink instead, which counts against you.
During Final Preparations, Philippa and Margarita want to speak with Ciri privately. Encouraging her to handle it alone builds her confidence. Insisting on joining her takes the decision out of her hands and counts as negative.
Inside Avallac’h’s lab, a revelation leaves Ciri furious and wanting to tear the place apart. Backing her anger is positive; telling her to calm down is not. Later, when Ciri asks to visit the grave of Skjall, who died because of the Wild Hunt, agreeing to go lets the two grieve together as father and daughter.

Once the battle at Kaer Morhen is over, Geralt has the option of bringing Ciri to Vizima to meet her father, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, on the way to Velen. Whether to make the visit is up to you; this choice determines whether the Witcher or Empress ending is available.
For the Witcher outcome specifically, do not visit Emhyr at all. Going straight to Velen removes the imperial route entirely, so a surviving Ciri chooses her own life rather than the throne.
If you do present Ciri to Emhyr, refuse the coin he offers for bringing her to him. Treating the moment like a paid contract wounds her confidence when she needs it most and pushes the ending in a different direction.

How the hidden score works
Ciri returns from the White Frost when positive marks are equal to or greater than negative ones. With four applicable choices (the snowball fight, the Lodge, the laboratory, and Skjall’s grave), two positives are enough for survival. If you also visit Emhyr and trigger the fifth mark, you need three positives.
To be safe, aim for all five positive choices and skip the Emperor. That combination clears the survival threshold and keeps her off the imperial track, which is exactly what the Witcher ending needs. If negative choices outnumber positive ones, Ciri does not come back, and the game plays its bleak conclusion instead.

How to know it worked
The result plays out during the epilogue quest “Something Ends, Something Begins.” Geralt informs Emhyr that Ciri gave her life in the last battle to stop the White Frost. Later, he reaches White Orchard’s old garrison outpost, where a blacksmith he hired has made a special silver sword.
Back at the White Orchard inn, Geralt meets Ciri again and hands her that silver sword. That moment confirms she is now a full Witcher, ready to set out on the Path. If you see this reunion and the sword handoff, you have the ending you were after.
