Valheim Best Food for Every Biome (1.0)

The strongest health, stamina, and eitr dishes to cook as you push from the Meadows to the Deep North.

The strongest health, stamina, and eitr dishes to cook as you push from the Meadows to the Deep North.

Your character starts with just 25 health, and everything above that number comes from what you have eaten in the last few minutes. Food sets your maximum health, stamina, and (from the Mistlands onward) eitr, and you can keep three different dishes active at once. Cooking with the ingredients from the biome you are currently in is almost always the correct move, because each tier roughly doubles the numbers of the one before it.

Quick answer: Eat three different foods, matched to the task. Run two health dishes plus one stamina dish for combat and bosses, flip to two stamina plus one health for exploring and mining, and swap one slot for an eitr dish when casting spells.

How the three-slot food system works

There is no hunger bar in Valheim and you cannot starve. Food is a timed buff that raises your maximum stats and their regeneration, then decays until it runs out. The rules that decide which dishes are worth cooking are short.

  • You can eat up to three foods at once, but they must be three different types.
  • You cannot re-eat the same food until its icon starts flashing (partly digested). Re-eating refreshes its strength and timer.
  • The fork colour on each item shows its bias: red for health, yellow for stamina, blue for eitr, white for balanced.
  • Maximum health feeds your stagger threshold, so shield-and-block players want health. Dodge players want stamina. Mages want eitr.

Buffs do not vanish all at once. They stay near full strength for most of the timer and then drop off sharply in the last stretch, which is why you should re-eat before the icon starts blinking rather than waiting for it to expire.

Best food in each biome

Cook the highest health and highest stamina dish you can reach in your current biome and you are covered for most of the game. The eitr column only matters once you enter the Mistlands and start using staves.

Meadows and Black Forest

In the Meadows you rely on the cooking station and foraging. Cooked deer meat is the strongest early health food, Honey gives the biggest stamina jump, and cooked boar meat rounds out a starter trio. The Black Forest unlocks the cauldron once you mine tin, which turns raw ingredients into stews. Deer stew handles health and carrot soup handles stamina, with minced meat sauce or boar jerky filling the third slot.

Swamp and Mountain

Serpent stew is the single biggest leap in the game. At 80 health it nearly triples your best Black Forest food, so hunting serpents in the ocean pays off the moment you can build a raft. Cheap, mass-produced sausages pair well with turnip stew to carry you through Sunken Crypts. In the Mountain, wolf skewer takes the health slot and eyescream leads stamina; onion soup is a cheaper alternative that does not need a high-tier cauldron, which is handy before you find silver.

Plains and Mistlands

Barley farming and the stone oven arrive in the Plains. Lox meat pie delivers large health reserves and blood pudding gives strong stamina, with bread or fish wraps as a flexible third dish. The Mistlands adds magic to your diet and forces a choice between physical stats and eitr. Misthare supreme is the peak health option and mushroom omelette or fish ‘n’ bread cover stamina. Staff users need eitr foods such as seeker aspic or yggdrasil porridge, which replace one physical dish.

Ashlands

The Ashlands demands the highest stats to survive its charred warriors. Piquant pie gives the largest health buff in the game and roasted crust pie leads stamina. Spellcasters should cook marinated greens and sparkling shroomshake to keep their magic pool high enough for endless waves. Entering this biome on Swamp-level food is a fast way to die, so upgrade your kitchen before you push in.

Upgrading your meals at every biome change is the single most important survival habit. The stat gap between tiers is large enough that stale food will get you killed against tougher enemies.

Deep North food (new in Valheim 1.0)

Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026 and added the Deep North as the eighth and final biome, along with more than 20 new food items that sit above the Ashlands tier. Two new creatures anchor the recipes: Moose, which can be tamed and drops moose meat and sinew, and Seals, which drop blubber and pelt. New crafting stations, the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln, support the chain.

Because the build is new, the community is still confirming exact dish values. The health leaders are shaping up as Meat In Bread and Seal Meat Soup, the stamina leaders as Oatmeal and Pancakes, and the eitr options include Fish Soup and Meatballs and Poteitr. Until you unlock these recipes, Ashlands food such as piquant pie and roasted crust pie remains fully viable through the Fader fight and the early Deep North.

All food stats through the Ashlands tier are unchanged from the pre-release build, so any loadout you already run still works. Only the new Deep North dishes push past the previous ceiling.

Best food combos for combat, exploring, and magic

The stats from all three slots simply add together, so your loadout is really a choice of what you are about to do. Pick the mix that matches the activity.

  • Combat and bosses (2 health + 1 stamina): maximise survivability and stagger. Ashlands example — piquant pie + mashed meat + roasted crust pie for around 239 health and 169 stamina.
  • Exploring, mining, sailing (2 stamina + 1 health): keep sprinting and swinging longer. Ashlands example — roasted crust pie + scorching medley + piquant pie for about 171 health and 230 stamina.
  • Mage (2 eitr + 1 health or stamina): no eitr means no spells. Ashlands example — marinated greens + sparkling shroomshake + piquant pie for roughly 167 health and 185 eitr.

Balanced white-fork dishes such as the Ashlands gourmet bowl (75 health, 75 stamina, 38 eitr) prop up every stat from a single slot. They are slightly less efficient than a focused trio, but they free up your other slots and are ideal for long base-building or sailing sessions when you would rather not juggle timers. For a tough fight, eat your strongest food right before it starts, and keep a healing mead on hand for burst damage that food regeneration alone cannot cover.
