Valheim: How to Get Past the Muddy Scrap Piles in Sunken Crypts

Muddy Scrap Piles are the mounds of dirt and bone that seal off doorways and side rooms inside Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome. They cannot be cut, smashed with a club, or squeezed past. They are mining nodes, and they only respond to a pickaxe.

Quick answer: Equip an Antler Pickaxe or an Iron Pickaxe and mine the Muddy Scrap Pile until it collapses. Each pile drops Scrap Iron and opens the passage behind it.

What you need before entering a Sunken Crypt

Everything on the list below is required before a pile can be cleared. The pickaxe is the part players most often forget, because bronze weapons and axes do nothing to these nodes.

A pickaxe. The Antler Pickaxe, unlocked after defeating Eikthyr, is enough. The Iron Pickaxe works too and lasts longer.
A Swamp Key, dropped by The Elder, to open the crypt’s reinforced gate.
A melee weapon you trust. Draugr guard the rooms behind most piles.
Free inventory space. Scrap Iron is heavy and cannot be teleported home.

Travel light to a crypt. The more empty slots you carry in, the more Scrap Iron you carry out in a single trip.

How to identify a Muddy Scrap Pile

Inside the crypt, look for rounded mounds of packed mud, often with bones or skulls jutting out of them. Some sit in the middle of a chamber as loose deposits. Others completely plug a green-lit doorway, which is the version that stops your progress.

Point your cursor at the mound. If the label Muddy Scrap Pile appears on screen, it is minable and it holds Scrap Iron.

Clearing a blocked doorway

Walk up to the pile blocking the passage and stand close enough that your swings connect. Crypt corridors are tight, so face the mound squarely rather than striking at an angle.

Select the Antler Pickaxe or Iron Pickaxe from your hotbar. No other tool registers damage on these nodes, and swinging an axe or club only drains stamina.

Mine the pile with repeated swings, letting stamina recover between bursts. Chunks break away as you go and Scrap Iron drops onto the floor, with pickup messages such as “Added Scrap iron x3” confirming each haul.

Keep mining until the mound collapses and the doorway behind it is fully open. Sweep the floor for any Scrap Iron you did not auto-collect before moving on.

Step through with your weapon already drawn. Draugr commonly wait on the other side, and they close the distance the moment the path opens.

How to confirm the pile is cleared

You know it worked when three things happen together. The mound disappears from the doorway, the “Muddy Scrap Pile” label no longer appears when you aim at that spot, and pickup notifications for Scrap Iron have stacked up in the corner of the screen. At that point you can walk straight through the opening into the next chamber.

Scrap Iron blocks teleportation, so plan a boat trip or an overland run back to base. A Smelter and Charcoal Kiln at home turn it into Iron bars.

Both tools break the same piles, so there is no reason to delay your first crypt. Start with the Antler Pickaxe, bring back enough Scrap Iron to smelt, then craft the Iron Pickaxe so later crypts cost you fewer repair stops. Every pile you break is both a doorway and a deposit, which makes clearing all of them the fastest way to fill a run.
