Comfort in Valheim controls one thing: how long the Rested effect stays active after you sit or sleep in a sheltered spot. It does not make the Rested bonuses stronger, so the goal is a resting area packed with the right furniture to keep those regeneration and experience perks running while you explore.
Quick answer: Place the highest-value item from each furniture category within 10 meters of where you rest. Each Comfort level adds one minute to the Rested effect, which starts at 8 minutes at Comfort 1.

How Comfort changes the Rested effect
Comfort is a pure duration mechanic. Every point extends the Rested timer by exactly one minute, and the perks themselves stay the same no matter how high your Comfort climbs. The duration follows a simple pattern: Rested duration = 7 minutes + your current Comfort level. So Comfort 1 gives 8 minutes, Comfort 10 gives 17 minutes, and Comfort 22 gives 29 minutes.
| Comfort level | Rested duration |
|---|---|
| 1 | 8 minutes |
| 5 | 12 minutes |
| 10 | 17 minutes |
| 15 | 22 minutes |
| 22 | 29 minutes |
While Rested is active, you get faster health regeneration, faster stamina regeneration, faster Eitr regeneration, and a boost to skill experience gains. Because the effect only ticks down over time, a longer timer means more of your trip is spent under those bonuses. Top up your Comfort before a long voyage or a boss run so the buff lasts through the journey.

Add to Google Preferences →Why furniture does not stack within a category
Every comfort item belongs to a category, and only the single highest-value item in each category counts. Lining up five rugs or three thrones adds nothing beyond the strongest one. Two black marble pieces of the same type, such as a Black Marble Bench and a Black Marble Throne, both fall under seating, so only the throne’s higher value applies.
The path to a high Comfort level is one strong item from each category rather than duplicates. Pick the best piece you can build for each group below.
| Category | Best item | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Shelter + fire | Sheltered near a lit fire | 2 |
| Fire | Hearth | 2 |
| Chair | Any throne (Raven, Stone, Black Marble, Bone) | 3 |
| Bed | Dragon Bed | 2 |
| Table | Round Table or Long Heavy Table | 2 |
| Rug | Bearskin, Wolf, or Lox Rug | 2 |
| Banner | Red or Blue Jute Curtain | 2 |
| Bathroom | Hot Tub (heated) | 2 |
| Lights | Lava Lantern | 2 |
| Plants | Any garland | 1 |
| Stand | Armor Stand | 1 |
| Pots | Any pot or Asksvin Skeleton | 1 |
The shelter bonus is separate from the fire’s own value. Being inside a shelter next to a lit fire is worth 2, and the Hearth adds its own comfort on top of that.

Reaching the maximum Comfort level
Combining the strongest item from each normal category reaches a Comfort level of 22, which gives a 29-minute Rested effect. Many of the top-tier pieces, like the Lava Lantern and Hot Tub, come from later biomes, so your ceiling rises as you progress. The in-game “Comfort is King” achievement asks you to reach Comfort level 20, which the setup above clears comfortably.
Two seasonal items push the number higher. The Maypole and the Yule Tree each add 1 Comfort and, unlike normal furniture, stack on top of the categories. With one of them you can hit 23, and with both you reach the vanilla maximum of 24 for a 31-minute Rested effect. The Maypole builds during summer events and rarely appears naturally in Meadows, while the Yule Tree builds during Yule events.
Conditions your resting area must meet
- Every comfort item must sit within 10 meters of your character to count.
- Fire sources only provide comfort while they are lit, so keep them fueled and shielded from rain.
- The Hot Tub only counts while it is heated.
- Nearby enemies or unsuitable conditions can stop you from resting at all.
Smoke management matters for indoor setups. A Hearth, Campfire, or heated Hot Tub produces smoke that damages you and can smother the fire if it has nowhere to go. Give the smoke a clear route upward with a vented opening near the roof while keeping rain off the flames, so your fire stays lit and your comfort bonuses stay active.
Away from your base, you can still get a quick boost: place a Campfire in a dungeon such as a Burial Chamber to receive Comfort 3 and Rested for 10 minutes before continuing farther inside.

Confirming the Rested effect is active
Sit or stand in your sheltered spot near the lit fire for roughly 20 uninterrupted seconds. The Rested icon then appears in your status bar with a timer that reflects your current Comfort level. Sleeping in a bed applies the same effect without the wait. If the timer reads shorter than you expect, one of your category items is likely out of the 10-meter range or its fire has gone out.
