Valheim: How to Regen Stamina Faster with Buffs, Meads, and Gear

Every reliable way to speed up stamina recovery, from the free Rested buff to meads, armor, and trinkets.

Every reliable way to speed up stamina recovery, from the free Rested buff to meads, armor, and trinkets.

Stamina is the resource that decides how long you can swing, block, dodge, sprint, and build before your Viking runs empty. It sits as the yellow bar under your health, and it drains from almost everything except walking. The good news is that recovery is fully in your control. A handful of buffs, consumables, and gear pieces stack together to push your regeneration far above the baseline.

Quick answer: Keep the Rested buff active for a flat +100% stamina regen, avoid the Cold, Wet, and Freezing effects, and only recover to about 50% before acting again since regen is fastest at low stamina. Stack a Tasty Mead (+100%) during fights for a fast top-up.

How stamina regeneration works in Valheim

Your character starts with 50 base stamina, split into bars worth 25 each. Regeneration kicks in one second after you stop using stamina, so back-to-back actions keep you locked out of recovery.

The refill rate is not constant. It is highest when your bar is nearly empty and slowest when it is nearly full. Base regen peaks at 12 per second at zero stamina and drops to 6 per second at full. Because of that curve, the fastest overall recovery comes from topping up to roughly 50% and getting back to work, rather than waiting for a full bar. When you are Cold or dealing with another penalty, aim for around 33% instead.

On top of that base rate, positive buffs are added together, while negative effects multiply the result. That ordering matters, which is why avoiding penalties is often as valuable as stacking buffs.

Get the Rested buff and rest for a bigger boost

The Rested buff is the single most important thing you can do, and it is free. Sit near a campfire or spend a moment inside a comfortable base, and after a short while you gain a large package of bonuses.

  • +100% Stamina regen
  • +50% Health regen
  • +50% XP gain
  • +100% Eitr regen

You should treat Rested as your default state and refresh it before heading out. The strength of the buff is fixed, but its duration grows with the Comfort level of where you rest. Adding chairs, tables, rugs, and other furniture and decorations to your base raises Comfort, which stretches how long Rested lasts after you leave.

While you are actively sitting and resting, a separate Resting effect applies an even larger +300% regen. That makes physically sitting down the quickest way to refill between activities at home or in the field.

Note: Rested and Resting cannot be gained while you are affected by Cold, Freezing, or Wet. Warm up and dry off first, then rest.

Avoid the Cold, Wet, and Freezing penalties

Negative status effects multiply your regen down, so they can quietly cancel out your buffs. Freezing is the harshest, dropping regen to 40% of normal. A campfire, shelter, or warm clothing removes these penalties.

EffectStamina regen multiplier
Freezing0.4x
Cold0.75x
Wet0.85x
Blocking0.8x
Swimming0x (no regen)
Falling0x (no regen)

Drink meads for stamina regen

Two meads apply an actual regeneration boost rather than just an instant refill, and they cover very different needs.

Tasty Mead

Tasty Mead doubles your stamina regen (+100%) but only for 10 seconds. It is cheap, made from Honey, Raspberries, and Blueberries, and you can drink another as soon as the last one wears off. That makes it a strong pick during boss fights and other bursts of heavy action, even though it lowers health regen for the duration.

Lingering Stamina Mead

The Lingering Stamina Mead is a Mistlands-tier drink that grants +25% stamina regen for a full 300 seconds, making it the best option for long stretches of exploring or building. To make it, first craft a Mead Base: Lingering Stamina, then ferment it.

Combine 10 Sap, 10 Cloudberries, and 10 Jotun Puffs to create the Mead Base: Lingering Stamina.
Place the mead base into a Fermenter and leave it for 2 in-game days. Once it finishes, you can drink it for the extended regen buff.

Wear armor that boosts stamina regen

The Bear armor set is a strong early upgrade you can craft after hunting bears in a Dark Forest biome. Wearing three pieces grants the Berserk effect, which raises both regen and offense at the cost of extra defensive vulnerability.

  • +15% Stamina regen
  • +30% Health regen
  • +10% Slash damage and +10% Chop damage
  • You take 25% more Slash, Pierce, and Blunt damage

There is also an upgraded Vilebone version of the set, made by hunting the undead bears called Viles in the Plains biome. Its Vilebone Wrath effect pushes stamina regen higher, at +40%.

Use Trinkets and the Adrenaline mechanic

Equipping a Trinket turns on the Adrenaline mechanic in combat. Every hit you land, take, or block builds Adrenaline, and once it reaches the threshold, the Trinket’s effect activates.

The earliest option for regen is the Bronze Pendant, crafted from 5 Bronze, 1 Bear Trophy, and 3 Rubies. At 60 Adrenaline it grants +25% stamina regen for 60 seconds, and it is the Trinket built specifically around a regen boost.

Other Trinkets restore a chunk of stamina instantly instead of raising your regen rate, which is useful when you need an immediate refill mid-fight.

Nimble AnkletInstantly regain 50 stamina
Resounding ShackleInstantly regain 100 stamina

How the regen buffs stack together

Positive buffs add together before any penalties multiply the total. That means combining Rested, Resting, and a Tasty Mead gives +500%, which works out to 6x regeneration. If you are Cold at the same time, the 0.75x multiplier brings that down to 4.5x. Being Rested, Resting, and Cold together lands at 3.75x, and adding a Tasty Mead lifts it to 4.75x.

Eat stamina-focused food

Food raises both your maximum stamina and how much you have to work with, and you can run up to three different foods at once. Stamina-oriented options are marked with a yellow fork icon. Early on, berries and mushrooms give a decent bar, while cooked dishes such as Carrot Soup, Onion Soup, and Turnip Stew push it much higher later in the game.

When you plan a stamina build, weight your food picks toward yellow-fork items for exploration, gathering, and dodge-heavy combat. Keep at least one health food in the mix for tougher fights, since a larger stamina pool does you no good if a single hit takes you out.

Put these together and stamina stops being a bottleneck. Rest before you leave, stay warm and dry, keep a Tasty Mead handy for spikes of effort, and lean on Bear armor, the Bronze Pendant, or a Lingering Stamina Mead as you progress. Recover to half a bar rather than a full one, and you will spend far more time acting and far less time waiting.
