Valor Mortis: How to Get the Duellist’s Focus Amber for a Wider Parry Window

The exact Chapter 2 route to the chest on The Battlefield, plus the verified effects of the Ambers you equip at the Lantern.

The Duellist’s Focus is an Amber in Valor Mortis that widens the parry window for melee weapons, which makes landing a perfect parry far more forgiving. There is a single copy in the whole game, and reaching it means starting the side quest “The Oathbound” in Chapter 2, then fast travelling to the Onslaught Arch Lantern on The Battlefield and clearing a path to a guarded chest.

Quick answer: In Chapter 2, defeat the masked officer below the cliff path to begin “The Oathbound,” fast travel to Onslaught Arch on The Battlefield, destroy the red barrier in the forest, kill the second officer, and loot the Duellist’s Focus from the ornate red chest.

What the Duellist’s Focus Amber does

Duellist’s Focus is a single-rank Amber. Its only function is to lengthen the window in which William can parry an incoming melee strike, so you have more time to tap block as the blow lands. There is no numeric value attached to the size of that increase in the game files, only the effect itself.

That matters because almost every enemy attack in Valor Mortis uses the same tight 0.2-second parry window, and a perfect parry costs no Endurance while dealing heavy posture damage. A wider window turns parrying from a reaction test into something you can hold cleanly through long boss strings.

Ambers are accessories you slot at any Lantern through the Levelling menu. Slots open at character levels 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, so Duellist’s Focus can sit in your loadout from very early on, alongside four others.

Before you start

Two things need to be true before the chest is reachable.

  • You must be in Chapter 2, where the hidden cliffside path opens up.
  • You must have the Abandoned Church Lantern unlocked so you can fast travel back to The Battlefield.
  • Bring a loaded pistol or other firearm — a ranged shot is the only way through the barrier near the chest.

Start “The Oathbound” in Chapter 2

From the broken wooden-platform area in Chapter 2, get past the three gunmen, then descend to the hidden wooden walkway underneath. The main route makes it easy to overlook.

Jump across the rocky gaps and keep going past a boulder engraved with an eye-and-triangle insignia. This leads into a small clearing.

Defeat the gold-masked officer waiting in the clearing. The kill triggers the side quest “The Oathbound” and drops an emblem plus a Mysterious Stone Pyramid into your inventory.

Travel to Onslaught Arch and clear the path to the chest

Head to the Abandoned Church Lantern and interact with it. Choose Travel, then select The Battlefield and pick Onslaught Arch.

You spawn at Onslaught Arch. Turn around and cross the wooden bridge, work along the cliff ledge, defeat the enemy there, and cross the suspension bridge on the far side.
Follow the dirt road into the forest and clear the two patrolling soldiers along the way. Take the right-hand trail toward a wall covered in red organic growth.
Aim your pistol at the glowing orb in the centre of the growth and shoot it. The barrier disintegrates and reveals the next target.

Defeat the second gold-masked officer in the clearing behind the barrier. This updates “The Oathbound.”

How to confirm you got it

Opening the chest shows an “ADDED TO INVENTORY” prompt for the Duellist’s Focus, and “The Oathbound” ticks over with a quest update. Open your inventory to see the Amber listed with its parry-window effect. To put it to use, return to any Lantern, open the Levelling menu and slot it into an Amber slot.

The Valor Mortis display setup screen asks players to adjust Gamma and Brightness, both set to 100%, until bright and dark areas are clearly visible.

Verified Amber effects and locations

Duellist’s Focus is one of several Ambers you equip at the Lantern, and the figures below are the shipped values for the ones you are most likely to weigh against it. Ranked entries show the value at rank I, II and III.

Duellist’s Focus pairs naturally with the Rapier, whose upgrade tree is built around parrying and whose perfect parry deals 150 posture damage against the Saber’s 100. A wider window plus heavy posture output makes posture breaks come quicker.

With the Amber slotted and a weapon that rewards timing, the parry stops being the thing that gets you killed and becomes the thing that ends fights. That is the whole point of picking up the single copy tucked behind the Onslaught Arch barrier.
