Valor Mortis: Mummy and Daddy Quest Walkthrough (Sewers)

Where to find the Mice, the music box that calms their "parents," and how to deliver the Cheese without losing their friendship.

Where to find the Mice, the music box that calms their “parents,” and how to deliver the Cheese without losing their friendship.

Mummy and Daddy is a short side quest in Valor Mortis. It begins and ends in the sewers beneath City of Orphans during Chapter 7. The Mice hand William a block of mouldy Cheese for their “parents,” two plague-ridden creatures locked in a cell. Your job is to get the food to them without starting a fight.

Quick answer: Take the Cheese from the burrow behind the ladder at the Sewers lantern. Burn the webs beside the Sewers Key chest, then play the hidden music box. Put the Cheese on the cell’s plate and report back.

What you need before starting Mummy and Daddy

  • Once lit, the Sewers lantern in City of Orphans becomes a fast-travel destination.
  • The Fire Transmutation, which burns away the webs hiding the route to the cell.
  • Enough strength to clear Carrions, a Spewer, a Volunteer and two Risen Grenadiers along the main sewer path.
  • The patience not to shoot the two creatures you will find behind bars.

Do not attack Mummy and Daddy at any point. Killing them ends the quest on its bad outcome. The Mice swear never to help William again, and you lose the friendship points the quest awards.

Mummy and Daddy walkthrough

Get the Cheese from the Mice

Go to the Sewers lantern in City of Orphans, lighting it if this is your first visit. The quest giver is nearby in that same area, so there’s little distance to cover.

Follow the canal to the small stick burrow tucked behind the nearby ladder and interact with it. A Mouse named Mittz asks for help, explaining that “Mummy and Daddy hadn’t been themselves of late,” and gives you the Cheese. A “New Side Quest” notice and a “Cheese added to inventory” message confirm the quest has started.

Reach the parents’ cell

Head down the main sewer passage, kill the first Carrion, and use the grapple point to cross the gap. Clear the two Carrions and the Spewer waiting on the far side.
Push through the next corridor. Backstab the patrolling enemy if you can, and use your Pistol on the ones standing farther back.
Take down the Volunteer at the route’s end. It attacks from a distance and can set you on fire. After defeating it, descend the ladder it guards.
Kill the two Risen Grenadiers in the cramped room below. Then open the chest there to take the Sewers Key.
Look to the left of that chest for a passage sealed by webs. Burn them with the Fire Transmutation to open the hidden room.
Interact with the second stick burrow next to the locked iron cell. The Mice introduce the two creatures inside as their parents, and William isn’t impressed. Mittz admits, “they’re not our parents, but they’re the only parents we have left,” and says the cell stays shut until you calm the pair down. A quest update appears here.

Play the music box and feed Mummy and Daddy

Go through the door beside the cell and smash the wooden crates in that corridor. They hide a round pipe opening low in the wall.
Crawl through the pipe into a small hidden bedroom with a rocking horse and a candle.

Interact with the open music box on the floor. Its tune carries into the cell, settles the parents, and the Mice unlock the door.
Go back to the cell and step inside. Interact with the plate on the wooden table near the candles to leave the Cheese.
Step out of the cell, then shut its door behind you.
Speak to the Mice at the burrow outside the cell. When they notice the parents aren’t eating, Mittz decides they’re simply “well behaved and they’re waiting for dinner time,” and hands over a gift.

How to confirm Mummy and Daddy is complete

You’ll see a “Quest Complete” banner showing a value of 750, followed by a “Tiny Whisker Gift x 1” pickup. Your journal then records that the Cheese was placed on the plate inside the cell. A closing entry notes that sparing the creatures was a wise choice. If that last line shows up, you have the good outcome.

Sparing the parents also earns 3 Mice friendship points. The late-game Mice reward needs at least 10 points, and they have to be banked before the story’s point of no return. The quest itself can still be done later by fast traveling back to the Sewers lantern. The friendship points can’t be earned after that cutoff, so finishing Mummy and Daddy during your first trip through the sewers is the safe option.

The Valor Mortis display setup screen asks players to adjust Gamma and Brightness, both set to 100%, until bright and dark areas are clearly visible.

The game does let you return and kill Mummy and Daddy after the quest is finished. Doing so devastates the Mice, who refuse to aid William for the rest of the game.

Tiny Whisker Gift

The quest reward is a gift from the Mice that you consume for 3,000 Catalysts. It is also handed out in five conversations across the game, and you can stack up to 99. Holding onto it costs nothing, so you can save several and cash them in together for a level-up at the lantern.

Fire Transmutation

Fire Transmutation sets enemies and objects in the environment on fire, letting you clear the webs beside the Sewers Key chest. The burning effect keeps damaging foes, making it useful when Carrions gather in the tunnels. Each upgrade uses Transmutation Material and increases the damage.

Sewers lantern

The Sewers lantern is one of City of Orphans’ three lanterns, along with Tribunal Square and Shamble Street. You can level up, travel and upgrade your Ferrofluid Flask there. It also works as the respawn point for the run down to the cell, so rest there before tackling the Volunteer and Grenadiers.
