The Pistol is a free pickup in the Valley of Ashes during Chapter II REGROUP of Valor Mortis. It waits inside a toppled luxury rail carriage that has fallen into the red plague growth beneath the broken bridge, and taking it hands you a sidearm built for breaking enemy weak points.

You can collect it without completing any quest; the carriage pickup is available whether or not you have begun An Unheard Farewell. That quest grants the Amber Sleight of Hand, rather than the Pistol.

How to reach the carriage in the Valley of Ashes

Start at the Guidepost Lantern beside Lucjan, where Chapter II opens, and follow the continuing road to the Demolished Path Lantern. Begin the Pistol route from there.
Go beyond the Demolished Path Lantern to where the road terminates at a damaged wooden bridge. Its deck has split apart, and a massive plague growth studded with glowing red spines covers it. Looking across the gap prompts William to remark on the bridge.

Under the bridge, the overturned carriage is lodged sideways in the growth. Approach from the bridge end, between the Demolished Path Lantern and The Climb Lantern.

Step inside the long wooden carriage. It opens into a luxury saloon with red damask walls, gilt leaf patterns and Napoleon’s laurel “N” monogram, candle lamps, a red cloak and an open book on the floor, and a blue tufted seat holding a revolver in a stand.
Put your crosshair on the revolver. The prompt reads [E] TAKE. Press it to claim the Pistol.

What happens when you take the Pistol

In a brief cutscene, William takes the pistol from its stand and examines it in front of the red wall. There is no separate item banner: afterwards the Pistol is in William’s left hand, and the ammo counter at the bottom right reads 05 over 00.

A two-page tutorial follows. Switch pages with A / D and close it with CONTINUE. The first page is titled “Pistol” and reads: “The Pistol is a trusty sidearm, perfect for destroying Nephtoglobin Weak Spots.”

The second page is titled “Nephtoglobin Remnants” and reads: “Destroying Nephtoglobin Weak Points on enemies will drop Nephtoglobin Remnants, which can be picked up to restore your Nephtoglobin.”

Fire at the luminous red weak points on enemies. The weapon also counts toward the Single Stroke achievement, which asks you to “Shoot off a Risen Grenadier’s bucket”.

James’s Iron Bench sells Pistol Cartridges for 200 Catalysts, and Lucjan sells them later as well, so you can keep the sidearm loaded for weak-point shots.
