WARDOGS Early Access Progression: Tank Unlocks and the Season 1 Gold Bar Grind

How role tracks, tank gating, and the 30 gold bar cosmetic change once Early Access replaces beta pacing.

How role tracks, tank gating, and the 30 gold bar cosmetic change once Early Access replaces beta pacing.

The progression curve players learned during the WARDOGS Closed Beta is not the curve that ships with Early Access on September 10. Beta levels were deliberately compressed so testers could touch every part of the sandbox in a three-day window. The live version stretches that back out, and it moves tanks onto a track most players were not grinding.

Quick answer: Tanks move from the Wardog account track to the Driver role track, so you unlock them by actually driving ground vehicles. Season 1 lasts one month, and the exclusive Season 1 skin costs 30 gold bars — a price that will not be lowered to fit the shorter season.

Why beta progression felt fast and Early Access will not

Beta pacing was a testing decision, not a design target. BULKHEAD condensed the curve so a limited player pool could reach vehicles, gear tiers, and higher-level unlocks quickly and report back on them. Early Access reverses that compression. Progression is spread out considerably, which means the levels that arrived in an afternoon during the beta will take real session time.

The early game stays approachable. Roughly the first 20 levels of each skill tree keep something close to beta pacing, so a new account still opens useful equipment without a long wall. The steepening happens after that, where higher-tier unlocks get pushed further apart and distributed across the tracks rather than clustered.

Tanks move to the Driver role track

The single change with the biggest practical effect is where armor sits. Tanks are being pulled off the main Wardog account track and placed on the Driver progression track. Wardog level rises from everything you do, so a tank sitting there was reachable by playing almost any way you liked. On Driver, it is gated behind the role itself.

Ground vehicle time is what feeds Driver XP. That means inserts, armor taxis, and delivering people to the fight, not empty laps around the map. If you plan to crew an L2A6 in Early Access, the path runs through lower-tier ground vehicles first.

Pilot works the same way in reverse. Helicopters build Pilot XP, and the attack helicopter sits behind a steep requirement reported around level 40, well above what most alpha testers reached across a full weekend. Ground and air levels do not feed each other.

How the six role tracks and Wardog level fit together

There is no class selection in the lobby. What you carry and what you do decides which track earns XP, and all six roles feed the overall Wardog level. Levels grant the right to buy an item; persistent cash is what actually unlocks it at the vendor.

TrackWhat builds it
AssaultAssault rifles and many sidearms
MedicSMGs and medical tools, revives
ReconMarksman rifles and recon equipment
SupportLMGs, shotguns, launchers, build and repair tools
DriverGround vehicles, including tanks after the change
PilotHelicopters

Each role track caps at level 100, and Wardog level runs to 600. Some rungs on a track hand out nothing at all, which is normal rather than a bug. Because unlocks need both a level and cash, a full XP bar with an empty balance still leaves the item locked.

Note: cash carries between matches and does not refill on death. Every spawn is a rebuy, so a stack of expensive losses slows unlocking as much as a slow XP curve does.

Season 1 gold bars: 30 bars in one month

Season 1 runs for a single month. The exclusive Season 1 cosmetic skin costs 30 gold bars, and that price is staying where it is. Howard Philpott confirmed the figure will not be adjusted downward to compensate for the shorter season, because the item is meant to read as a high-investment mark of a heavy first-season player.

Gold bars are not bought with real money. BULKHEAD has committed to selling cosmetics only during Early Access, with no monetization of in-game cash or gold bars, and the $49.99 Supporter Edition explicitly does not include either. Bars come from play. At the end of a major update cycle, level progression and cash reset, and leftover cash converts automatically into gold bars.

That conversion creates an awkward tension for anyone chasing the skin. Hoarding cash to bank a larger conversion means playing a whole season with worse gear, while spending freely on unlocks leaves less to convert. Thirty bars inside one month is a demanding target either way.

Earning faster: where the cash and XP actually come from

Matches are three-team Control Zone fights, first to 100 points. Presence in the zone scores. Inside it, the shifting Hot Zone pays roughly double on both cash and XP, which makes zone discipline the highest-value habit for anyone grinding a track or a bar count.

  • Medic XP rewards keeping live teammates alive near the objective, not solo pushes with an SMG.
  • Driver and Pilot XP reward passengers delivered alive; empty joyrides pay very little.
  • Assault still needs zone time — kills out in the open do not move the objective.
  • Support earns through denial, explosives, fortification, and logistics work.
  • Refuelling a stranded vehicle with a jerrycan pays cash on top of the favour.

Kit cost discipline matters as much as playtime. Ammunition is billed separately by caliber, running from about $10 a box to $250 for premium types, and flares cost roughly $750 each with a cooldown. Everyone below level 9 gets a 50 percent discount across the shop, and the Bushmaster M17S is a free starter rifle.

Exact cash prices for individual unlocks are still moving. Figures seen during the Closed Alpha and Closed Beta came from builds where test-range vehicles were free and the economy was being tuned, so they are not a reliable price list for the shipped game. The numbers that matter will be the ones on the WARDOGS Steam page and in official patch notes at launch.

No further beta or playtest window has been announced. The August 21–23 Closed Beta is complete, and preorder access applied to that test only.

If you are planning the first week, the practical read is simple. Pick one role track and commit to it rather than spreading XP thin, because the tracks no longer hand you a tank for general play. Spend cash on gear you will genuinely field before the cycle ends, since anything left over converts to gold bars at reset — and if the Season 1 skin is the goal, that conversion is the only route to 30 bars in thirty days.
