Buddha and the Cat is an Encounter Quest in Where Winds Meet that begins inside Seedling Temple, in the Qingzhou – Eastern Peak area. A sculptor named Lin Shuang has stalled on restoring the temple’s Buddha statue. You need to talk him and Abbot Daokong out of a long-running misunderstanding, then move the in-game clock forward twice before the encounter will close.
Quick answer: Talk to Lin Shuang, then tell Daokong “The Buddha does not see all mortal beings.” Pick “‘Yes’ is the same as ‘no’” on the steps, skip 1 day, read the Abbot’s letter, then skip 3 days and attend the Sutra Lecture.
Buddha and the Cat start location in Qingzhou
Head to Seedling Temple on the Eastern Peak in Qingzhou. Reaching the entrance unlocks the temple as a new teleport point, which saves a walk later when the time skips leave you elsewhere. Once you’re close, the encounter tracker names the quest and shows its opening line: “How can one find a perfect path in this world, to honor the Buddha without forsaking you?” The tracker also displays an “Accept Within” timer, so pick the encounter up while it’s offered.
The quest description describes an artisan sighing over the statue he is restoring. That artisan is Lin Shuang, who kneels on the dais in the main hall.
Seedling Temple blocks several movement options on its grounds, including Lightness Skills, Climb, Wallstride, and Sky Tether, so you’ll be walking between the hall and the Abbot’s quarters.

Only two conversations ask you to choose a response. These are the answers that move the story forward.
| Conversation | Pick this | Other options shown |
|---|---|---|
| Abbot Daokong, in his quarters | “The Buddha does not see all mortal beings” | “The Buddha stands far beyond mortal reach” |
| Daokong and Lin Shuang, on the steps | “‘Yes’ is the same as ‘no’” | “I don’t understand,” “Perhaps he fears your blame” |
The first choice helps Daokong see what is actually eating at Lin Shuang. The second resolves the old Zen riddle about whether a dog has Buddha-nature, which both men have been reading differently for years.

That conversation adds the Zen Koans entry (Record of Zhaozhou, Tang Dynasty) to your Erudition collection. Lin Shuang also says the name “Qingqing,” which becomes important later.

Skipping time: 1 day for the letter, 3 days for the Sutra Lecture
The second half of the encounter runs on the in-game clock. The objective text reads “Adjust time via Menu-Time or wait for time to lapse,” so you can wait it out if you like. Using the time dial is much faster.

Buddha and the Cat rewards and completion check
The encounter is done when the lecture cutscene ends and an “Encounter-Buddha and the Cat” banner appears with your rewards.
| Reward | Amount |
|---|---|
| Echo Jade | 50 |
| Qingzhou Exploration | 10 or 50 |
| Coin | 15,000 |
| Stored EXP | 15,000 |
| Jade Fish | 150 |
| Trace Jade | 1,500 |
The Qingzhou Exploration amount has shown up as both 10 and 50 on completion screens, so don’t worry if your number differs. Jade Fish and Trace Jade are credited during the same finish, alongside the banner items.
If no reward banner appears, stay in the hall until the sermon has fully finished. Leaving early can stop it from triggering.
After the banner closes and the items reach your inventory, Buddha and the Cat is marked complete. Seedling Temple stays on your map as a teleport point.
