What Zhang Wanshi’s puppet formations do and how to beat a mechanical boss in the new Hidden Mountain region.

Changeless Heart, also known as Zhang Wanshi, is one of the new bosses added with Where Winds Meet’s Hidden Mountain expansion, the update that opens the game’s 2.0 era. It belongs to the region’s set of mechanical enemies, and its signature threat is a set of deadly puppet formations that fight alongside it.

Quick answer: Treat Changeless Heart as a mechanical fight, not a damage race. Watch the puppet formations, learn their attack patterns, and aim for structural weak points instead of hitting the boss body indiscriminately.

Where Changeless Heart fits in Hidden Mountain

Hidden Mountain went live on July 23, 2026, adding four main areas built around Mohist culture and a vertical map that stretches more than 2,000 meters through underwater ruins, underground caverns, clockwork towers, and a mechanical city above the clouds. The region introduces more than ten new bosses, and several of them, including Changeless Heart, are built around machinery rather than pure swordplay.

The story that surrounds these fights centers on the split between Mohist Hill, which uses mechanisms to help ordinary people, and the Qiongqi Artificers, who treat mechanical power as a means of control. That mechanical theme carries directly into how the bosses behave.

Changeless Heart (Zhang Wanshi) mechanic

The core of the encounter is the puppet formations Zhang Wanshi commands. Rather than facing a single body, you deal with a controlled group of mechanical puppets that press you together. Reading how those formations move is more important than raw output.

How to fight a mechanical boss

Higher-difficulty encounters in Hidden Mountain reward observation over aggression. The mechanical bosses telegraph their moves through their moving parts, so the fight becomes a question of when to strike rather than how hard.

Watch the puppet formations before committing. Note how they group and reposition so you can predict which attacks come next.
Read the attack structure. Mechanical enemies here move in patterns, so identify the wind-ups and openings instead of trading blows blindly.
Target the weak points. Direct damage alone is inefficient against these bosses. Focus your hits on the structural spots that open up when the formation shifts.

Note: The same principle applies to the region’s other mechanical enemies. Bosses like the Rosy-Faced Swordsworn, Ci & Cuo, and the Ironheart Centipede all reward pattern reading and precise timing, and both the Bell Toller and Golden Colossus are set to arrive as future additions.

Tools that help before the fight

Because Changeless Heart sits inside a mechanical region, the same skills that solve Hidden Mountain’s puzzles also make the encounter cleaner. Celestial Seize has a larger role here and can move objects and rearrange structures, which matters when the environment itself is part of the challenge. Completing the early Divinecraft quests teaches how Mohist mechanisms work, and that mechanical literacy carries over to reading a puppet-driven boss.

On the loadout side, Version 2.0 adds the Gauntlets weapon type built for close-range pressure and fast bursts, paired with the Bamboocut Kite martial art that mixes Gauntlets with a Rope Dart for movement. Test it before investing heavily so you know whether its aggressive melee style suits a fight where positioning against formations matters.

You confirm the fight is going your way when the puppet formation breaks and structural weak points stay exposed long enough to punish. If the boss keeps regrouping and your hits feel like they do nothing, that is the sign you are attacking the body rather than the weak points, so reset, watch the pattern again, and strike on the opening.
