Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse features the Whip as its basic whip. You’ll find it in a chest far below in the Catacombs of Paris, after a lengthy descent through spike shafts, an elevator ride, and a stretch of saw blades. Begin beside the huge skull in the Catacombs; from there, the path leads only downward.

Quick answer: Drop through the giant skull’s mouth into Throat of Hell, ride the Quarry Elevator down, cross the Blood Pits, then open the chest in the Hall of the Fallen Angels.

Route to the Whip chest from the giant skull

Every area on this path belongs to the Catacombs of Paris. Expect enemies and environmental hazards the whole way down, so arrive with your health topped up.

Travel to the giant skull platform in the Catacombs of Paris. It sits near the border of Jaws of Limbo and the Hall of the Fallen Angels, and your map marker will show you on top of it.
Swing from the ring positioned over the skull, then strike the switch above you. The route through the skull will open.
Drop through the skull’s mouth. You fall down a red-lit shaft into Throat of Hell.

In Throat of Hell, grapple across the rings to the left side and interact with the glowing pedestal mechanism using the INTERACT prompt. A “MAP UPDATED” message confirms it registered.

Head back to the right and work your way down the spike pit, using the rings to stay clear of the spikes.
Move right into the Condemned Mineshaft and call the Quarry Elevator. Step on and ride it down.

Keep descending until you reach the lower tunnel of the Condemned Mineshaft. If the elevator stops short, step off briefly or reset it to continue down. Clear the enemies in the tunnel and enter the Blood Pits.

Cross the first stretch of the Blood Pits by jumping between platforms and swinging across rings. Spikes line the floor and walls, and enemies wait below the rings.

Follow the lower tunnel to the chamber on the far left, which is the Hall of the Fallen Angels. Open the ornate chest resting on the pile of skulls in the middle of the room to collect the Whip.

The Hall of the Fallen Angels also holds a Wise Heart Fragment, one breakable wall and one secret area, so check the room before you leave.

How to confirm you picked up the Whip

Opening the chest brings up the item screen. It names the weapon as WHIP, lists it as ORDINARY with ATK 25, and offers a “HOLD TO EQUIP” prompt. Equip it there or later from your inventory.

A short conversation follows, in which Rose talks about learning the whip from her father before she was allowed near a sword:

Rose: My father first showed me how to use it. I could scarcely walk when he placed one in my hand.

Afterward, your map marks the chest room in the Hall of the Fallen Angels as visited, which is a quick way to double-check you reached the right spot.

Whip stats in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

The Whip is a tier 1 weapon. Its numbers are the lowest of the whip family, but it shares the same stagger, mana gain and range bonus as the stronger versions.

StatValue
RarityOrdinary
Tier1
ATK25
Attack power24
Stagger power30
Mana per hit3
Combo finisherWhip Drag

Its special property rewards spacing. Hits landed with the far end of the lash deal more damage than hits closer to Rose, so fighting at the edge of the whip’s reach gets the most out of it.

Every whip-type weapon and where to find it

The Whip is one of four whip-type weapons. Each step up in tier raises ATK and attack power, while stagger power, mana per hit, the Whip Drag finisher and the tip damage bonus stay the same across all four.

WeaponRarity (tier)ATK / attack powerFound in
WhipOrdinary (1)25 / 24Catacombs of Paris
Thorn WhipRefined (2)50 / 30Library
Morning StarMasterpiece (3)75 / 35Main Hall
Vampire KillerLegendary (4)100 / 40Notre-Dame

Vampire Killer adds fire on top of the shared whip traits. Enemies struck with its tip burn, and anything it kills explodes in flames.

Collecting whips also feeds Leon’s arcana, The Fallen, which grants the Arcane Whip ability and the Holy Cross spell. Its works of mercy are listed below.

  • Find 3 different whip-type weapons.
  • Kill 5 enemies with the same cross (not necessarily at the same time).
  • Kill 10 enemies with a whip attack.

Picking up the Whip in the Hall of the Fallen Angels counts as one of the three whip-type weapons, and equipping it right away is the simplest way to start on the 10 whip kills.
