Windrose: How to Smelt Iron Into Iron Ingots

Iron in Windrose is the gateway material for Level 6 gear and a long list of mid-game crafting stations, but the smelting recipe stays hidden until the game decides you have earned it. The block is not a missing tool or a special furnace. It is a progression gate tied to the Coastal Jungle boss and a second crafting station most players forget to build.

⚒️
Quick answer: Defeat the Coastal Jungle boss, sail to the Foothills, mine an Iron Deposit with at least a Copper Pickaxe, then smelt 3 Foothills Iron Ore + 1 Charcoal in a Smelting Furnace. Charcoal comes from a separate Coal Oven (2 wood → 1 charcoal).

Why the iron recipe is missing from your furnace

If your Smelting Furnace only shows Copper Ingots, the recipe has not been unlocked yet. Windrose ties the Foothills Iron Ingot blueprint to two events happening in order: killing the Coastal Jungle's Local Threat (the boss tied to the Revenge is Best Served Cold quest) and physically mining a Foothills Iron Ore node. Discovering the boss is not enough. The kill has to register, and the Foothills discoveries have to fire.

Once both happen, the iron bar recipe appears automatically in any Smelting Furnace you own. There is no upgrade station, no tier-2 smelter, and no NPC unlock involved.

Region accessSail to the Foothills (start the Needle in a Haystack quest)
Pickaxe tierCopper Pickaxe or better
Smelting Furnace15 Clay + 30 Stone

Hardwood from Divi-Divi trees in the Foothills is useful for charcoal output, but standard wood works for the basic conversion as well.

Finding Iron Ore in the Foothills

Iron Deposits are marked on the world map with a pickaxe icon once you enter the Foothills. The first guaranteed node sits on the island that the Needle in a Haystack quest sends you to, which makes it the cleanest place to trigger your first recipe unlock.

The deposits look like grey rock dotted with orange flecks, and they sit out in the open rather than inside caves. Expect Goats or Wolves nearby. Clear the area before mining, since interruption from a wolf pack mid-swing wastes both stamina and durability.

A Copper Pickaxe is enough to break Iron Ore. You do not need an Iron Pickaxe first, despite what older playtest builds did.

Producing charcoal in the Charcoal Kiln

The Charcoal Kiln is the step most players miss. It is a separate building from the Smelting Furnace, and without it, the iron recipe is functionally locked even when the blueprint is unlocked.

Step 1: Place the Charcoal Kiln near your Smelting Furnace using 25 Wood and 20 Clay. Position it close so you can move charcoal between stations without long walks.

Step 2: Load wood into the Charcoal Kiln's input slot. The conversion rate is 2 wood for 1 charcoal, so plan stockpiles in even numbers.

Step 3: Pull finished charcoal from the output slot once the burn cycle completes. Keep a running buffer of at least 10 charcoal if you intend to smelt iron in batches.

Smelting the Foothills Iron Ingot

With ore mined and charcoal ready, the actual smelting takes about 30 seconds per bar.

Step 1: Open the Smelting Furnace interface and confirm the Foothills Iron Ingot recipe is visible. If it is not listed, you either skipped the boss fight or have not yet mined a node.

Step 2: Insert 3 Foothills Iron Ore and 1 Charcoal per bar you want to produce. The furnace will queue multiple bars if you load proportional stacks.

Step 3: Wait roughly 30 seconds per ingot, then collect the Foothills Iron Ingots from the output. The recipe does not change at higher tiers, so this same loop carries you through most mid-game crafting.

What iron unlocks

Iron is the prerequisite for Level 6 item upgrades and a wide set of buildings and tools that define the mid-game base. Common uses include the anvil, jewelry crafting station, extra-large smelting stations, crates, candle holders, and several ship fittings beyond the Copper Ingot tier.

If you would rather skip mining entirely, certain merchants sell iron and iron bars directly. Buying is faster for one-off recipes but expensive at scale, so most players keep at least one Coal Oven and Smelting Furnace running on a permanent basis.

Common reasons iron smelting still fails

SymptomCauseFix
Furnace only shows Copper Ingot recipeCoastal Jungle boss not killedComplete Revenge is Best Served Cold
Recipe still missing after bossHave not mined an Iron Ore node yetMine at least one node in the Foothills
Recipe shown but cannot craftNo charcoal in inventory or furnaceBuild a Coal Oven and convert wood to charcoal

Once the recipe appears and the Coal Oven is feeding charcoal, iron production becomes one of the most reliable loops in the game. Set up both stations side by side, keep a wood and ore buffer, and the Foothills Iron Ingot stops being a bottleneck for the rest of your progression.
