World of Warcraft: How to Get Linen Cloth

Linen Cloth is the first crafting cloth most characters ever see, and it never comes from a gathering node. It is pure loot. If your bags are empty and Tailoring or First Aid is stalling, the fix is picking the right enemies in the right level band and killing a lot of them.

Quick answer: Kill humanoid enemies roughly between level 5 and 20 and loot every corpse. Mobs in the low-to-mid teens are the most productive, dropping 1–3 Linen Cloth per kill.

Which enemies drop Linen Cloth

Cloth comes off creatures that would plausibly be wearing clothes. In practice that means Humanoids — bandits, kobolds, gnolls, troggs, trolls, furbolgs, harpies, quilboar, centaurs, pirates, cultists. A smaller pool of Undead also drops Linen, which is why Tirisfal Glades and Silverpine Forest work so well for Horde characters.

Beasts and other non-humanoid creatures give you nothing. Clearing a field of boars, wolves, or spiders is wasted time no matter how low level they are, so ignore them entirely while farming.

If you are unsure about a target, hover your cursor over it. The tooltip lists the creature type directly under its name, and anything tagged Humanoid is a valid cloth target.

Linen Cloth mob level ranges

The type of cloth a humanoid drops is tied to its level, not to the zone or the faction. Linen sits at the very bottom of that ladder, and once enemies climb past the mid-teens they start handing you Wool Cloth instead.

Below level 5 you will barely see any Linen at all, which is why your very first starting area is usually a poor farm. The volume picks up in the second zone your character visits, around level 10 and up. Stay inside the 11–16 band when you are farming on purpose, because the overlap range splits your loot between two cloth types and slows you down.

How to kill and loot for Linen Cloth

Travel to a low-level zone with dense humanoid camps. Azuremyst Isle, Elwynn Forest, Teldrassil, Dun Morogh, Durotar, Mulgore, and Tirisfal Glades all qualify for the early range. Open your map and pick a camp rather than wandering.

Select a humanoid enemy, then use its tooltip to verify the creature type. The level 8 Bandit Highwayman in the Gustberry Lowlands on Azuremyst Isle is an ideal example, and Kobolds in the human starting area outside Stormwind qualify too.

Kill it. There is no special requirement, no tagging trick, and no profession skill involved — Linen is rolled on the standard loot table when the enemy dies.

Right-click the corpse to open the loot window and take everything. You know it worked when Linen Cloth appears in the loot list alongside the copper and any junk drops, then stacks up in your bags.

Loop the camp. Respawn timers in these zones are short, so by the time you finish the last enemy in a group the first one is usually back. Running a tight circuit between two or three nearby camps beats standing still.

Best Linen Cloth farming spots

Density and respawn speed matter more than raw drop percentage. The spots below pack enough humanoids into a small area that you rarely stop swinging.

Westfall is the standout for volume. The Riverpaw Gnolls around Sentinel Hill respawn so quickly that a new one can appear before the previous corpse settles. The catch is quest progression — once you finish the zone’s main chain ending with Return to Sentinel Hill, those mobs are gone and the spot stops working.

Silverpine Forest is the strongest Horde option once you can handle the level range, because the Hillsbrad Worgen there drop Linen exclusively and sit close together with a fast respawn. Tirisfal Glades is the easier early pick, with both Scarlet Crusade humanoids and Undead feeding the same loot table.

Dungeon runs

Low-level dungeons are packed with humanoids and nothing competes for the kills. Ragefire Chasm, The Deadmines, and Wailing Caverns all hand over stacks of Linen in a single clear, and a higher-level character can sweep them solo in minutes.

How much Linen Cloth you need

Set a target before you start so you know when to stop. Leveling First Aid through its Linen tier takes 180 Linen Cloth, and Tailoring needs at least 190, mostly converted into Bolt of Linen Cloth. Blacksmithing and Engineering also call for small amounts in early recipes such as Rough Weightstone, Copper Shortsword, and Rough Dynamite.

Rogues can pickpocket Linen Cloth from humanoids without killing them.
Low-level chests occasionally contain a few pieces.
The Auction House is the fastest route if you would rather spend gold than time.

One last habit worth building: if you are pushing toward Wool Cloth anyway, farm the higher end of the range. Most mobs in that band drop both, so you will fill your Linen quota as a side effect of a Wool run rather than making two separate trips.
