PEAK: How to Handle Frogs in the Gloom Biome

Escape the tongue grab, cook frogs into food, or ride them across the fog to THE CITADEL.

Escape the tongue grab, cook frogs into food, or ride them across the fog to THE CITADEL.

Frogs turn a calm stretch of the Gloom biome in PEAK into an amphibian ambush. They hide near lily pads and swampy water, and if you stay in their line of sight they will fire a tongue and drag you toward them, usually dumping you into the drowsy fog at the bottom of the biome.

Quick answer: Run up to a frog and pick it up so it can no longer use its tongue. Throw it away to remove the threat, cook it on a Portable Stove for Cooked Frog Legs, or throw it in your travel direction and let it pull you along.

How the frog grab works

A frog only grabs you when it has direct line of sight and you are inside its range. When both are true it flicks out its tongue, pulls you toward it, and makes you ragdoll. That yank often drops you into the Gloom below, where you build up the sleep effect and lose visibility, so a single grab can throw off a carefully planned crossing.

The reach matters more than it looks. A frog can still catch you even when you are above the fog, so hanging near the edge of a tree or rock does not make you safe. You will hear a frog before you see one, and the croaking is directional, so use the sound to work out which way the threat is coming from.

Note: Frogs were toned down in the 2.01.a update. After a frog grabs you there is now a universal 6-second cooldown, so no other frog can pull you during that window. That gives you a brief moment to reposition after being flung.

Pick up a frog to shut it down

The core trick is that a frog cannot attack while you are holding it. Chase it down and grab it like any other item, and the tongue attack stops instantly. From there you decide what to do with it.

Holding a Frog in the Gloom in Peak
Locate the frog by its croak, then close the distance while it is in front of you.
Pick the frog up. Once it is in your hands, it is harmless.
Throw it away from you to clear your path. You know it worked when the frog is gone from your route and can no longer reach you with its tongue.

If you would rather not get close, you can throw junk items near a frog to distract it and slip past while it is busy. Keep valuables in your bag when you do this, because anything a frog swallows is lost for good.

Cook a frog into Cooked Frog Legs

To remove a frog permanently and get food out of it, you need a Portable Stove. It shows up at random inside Luggage. Place it down, switch it on, and it stays active for 60 seconds.

Set up and activate the Portable Stove somewhere near the frog you want to deal with.
Chase the frog, pick it up so it can no longer use its tongue, and carry it back to the stove.
Cook the frog on the active stove. It dies and turns into Cooked Frog Legs, which you can eat.

Ride a frog across the Gloom to THE CITADEL

The same tongue that yanks you around can become a free ride. When you throw a held frog, it lands and immediately fires its tongue to pull you toward wherever it lands. Aim that throw in your travel direction and you launch yourself forward.

Pick up a frog and face the direction of THE CITADEL or the next island you want to reach.
Hold Q to throw the frog. When it lands, its tongue drags you across to it.
Pick the frog back up and throw it again, repeating the pull to skip across the swamp. Watch for other frogs and for ghosts while you chain the throws.

How to avoid getting grabbed

If you would rather not engage at all, the simplest counter is to stay out of range and out of sight. A frog needs to see you to fire, so obstacles that break line of sight stop the grab entirely.

TacticWhy it helps
Listen for the croakingThe sound is directional, telling you where a frog sits before it can reach you.
Break line of sightA frog can only grab you when it can see you, so hide behind cover in the Gloom.
Stay off tree and rock edgesFrogs can still pull you into the fog even when you are above it, so keep back from ledges.
Use the Anti-ZookaIts anti-gravity bubble floats you above the fog to reposition and scout your next move.

Between the 6-second cooldown, the option to pick frogs up on the spot, and the ability to fling yourself forward with a well-aimed throw, frogs shift from a run-ending nuisance to a tool. Learn their croak, keep your route in mind before you dive, and the trip through the Gloom to THE CITADEL becomes far more predictable.
