Mortal Shell 2: Village Outskirts Full Walkthrough (First Level)

Route from the ruined battlements to the Overgrown Temple, with the Muradean Actuator and the gate plate that clears the corruption.

Route from the ruined battlements to the Overgrown Temple, with the Muradean Actuator and the gate plate that clears the corruption.

Village Outskirts is the first proper level of Mortal Shell 2, picking up right after the Forlorn Village prologue where you commune with the Undermether and take control of the Harbinger. It hands you your first Beacon, your first weapon upgrade material, and a short underground temple that teaches the game’s core combat rule before you ever reach Marrow Keep.

Quick answer: Climb the stairs past the shrine, turn left at the hanging bodies, smash the wooden boxes to drop into the flooded cave, and cleanse the Village Outskirts beacon to claim the Muradean Actuator. Ride the elevator down to the Overgrown Temple, clear the shielded enemies, step on the floor plate to open the metal gate, then cleanse the corruption to finish the area.

Reach the Village Outskirts beacon

The opening stretch is a straight run through stone ruins with only one branch that matters. Ruk, the oversized raven, marks the way forward, and the path funnels you toward the first Beacon.

Run through the ruined battlements and take the wooden stairs on your right. This is the only climb, so ignore the dead ends and keep moving up.

Stop at the shrine to read the sidearm prompt. It teaches you to Hold [Left Trigger] to Aim then press [Right Trigger] to Fire, which you will need for ranged enemies shortly after.
Continue into the open area filled with hanging bodies and turn left. Following the path straight will loop you back, so the left turn is the real route.
Break the stack of wooden boxes blocking the way and drop down into the watery cave below. The Village Outskirts beacon sits here.
Interact with the beacon. Resting restores your health and resolve, and it also respawns nearby enemies, so treat it as your checkpoint before pushing deeper.

Claim the Muradean Actuator and take the elevator

The beacon opens into an interior chamber that holds your first meaningful pickup. The Muradean Actuator unlocks weapon upgrades, so grabbing it here is worth the short detour.

Enter the beacon’s interior and head down the stairs. Open the chest in the middle of the room to collect the Muradean Actuator.
Go through the door behind the chest and step onto the pressure plate. The elevator rides down and drops you into the Overgrown Temple.

Clear the Overgrown Temple

The temple is a combat pocket built around one lesson. The glowing prompt on the right teaches Exploiting Vulnerability, meaning certain attacks work better on certain foes. Against shielded enemies, heavy attacks break through where light attacks bounce off.

Read the glow on the right to trigger the Exploiting Vulnerability tip, then move forward and take out the first shielded enemy with a heavy attack.

Head down the stairs to a second shielded enemy. Watch the corner, where a larger foe throws rocks and slams the ground if you close in. Chip it with your ranged weapon, and back off the moment it grabs a rock.
Note the metal gate on the right and the green pedestal behind the large enemy. You cannot take the pedestal yet, so take the other path instead.
Follow that path to two more shielded enemies. Kill both, then press the floor plate at the end. This opens the metal gate you passed earlier.
Go through the gate and cleanse the corruption sitting behind it. This is what completes the level.

Tip: Before you leave through the corruption, backtrack to the green pedestal behind the roots. Now that the beacon is cleansed you can pick it up for Ventrium, an upgrade material.

How to confirm the level is done

You know the area is cleared when the BEACON CLEANSED message appears after purging the corruption. Interacting with the corruption again brings up the RETURN TO SURFACE? prompt, which sends you back up to the Village Outskirts beacon so you can carry on.

If the gate won’t open

The metal gate in the Overgrown Temple stays shut until you press the floor plate at the far end of the side path, past the last pair of shielded enemies. If it isn’t opening, you have not reached or triggered that plate yet.

The green pedestal also refuses to be picked up on your first pass. It only becomes available after the corruption behind the gate is cleansed, so grab it on the way out rather than trying to force it early. With the Muradean Actuator and Ventrium in hand and the corruption gone, you are ready to head on toward the Disciple’s Grotto and, eventually, Marrow Keep.
