Enshrouded 1.0: How to Upgrade Storage Chests in Place (Every Upgrade and Magic Chest Cost)

In Enshrouded 1.0, you no longer have to empty a full chest, pick it up, and craft a bigger one. You can upgrade the chest where it stands, and everything inside stays put.

Quick answer: A chest that’s already placed can be advanced by one size, or changed into a Magic Chest matching its current size, with its contents left in place. Each operation has a separate price. Improving a basic chest costs less than making the larger one from scratch.

What changed for chests in 1.0

Keen Games’ 1.0 update notes introduce direct chest upgrades: storage no longer needs to be emptied and collected before improving it. They also let you name your chests.

You can perform either of two upgrades without removing the chest. Increase a placed chest by one size, or make a regular chest magical while retaining its size; in both cases, its contents remain untouched. Afterward, it either offers additional slots or functions as a Magic Chest, with the stored items still inside.

  • Small Chest: 24 slots
  • Medium Chest: 32 slots
  • Large Chest: 40 slots
  • Huge Chest: 56 slots
  • Enormous Magic Chest: 72 slots

A Magic Chest has the slot count of a standard chest of the same size. The change affects its function, not its storage capacity.

In-place upgrade costs for plain chests

Upgrading a chest you have already placed costs less than crafting the bigger chest new at the Carpenter. A placed Small Chest becomes a Medium Chest for 2 Nails, 2 Wood Planks and 1 Metal Sheets. A new Medium Chest costs 8 Nails, 10 Wood Planks and 2 Metal Sheets.

Magic Chest conversion costs for placed chests

A placed standard chest can be changed into a Magic Chest of its original size. This leaves its storage capacity unchanged, while making its contents available for crafting anywhere in your base (how craft from storage works is in our Magic Chest guide). The Medium Magic Chest’s in-game description is “An improved storage option with enhanced capacity. The items stored here can be used for crafting purposes from anywhere in the base!”

Upgrading a Magic Chest to the next size

A placed Magic Chest can also be upgraded to the next Magic size. The cost is the full recipe of the bigger plain chest plus the magic conversion for that size: a Small Magic Chest becomes a Medium Magic Chest for 8 Nails, 10 Wood Planks, 2 Metal Sheets, 1 Shroud Core and 2 Goo.

Upgrading the plain chest first and converting it to magic afterwards costs less. A Small Chest goes to Medium for 2 Nails, 2 Wood Planks and 1 Metal Sheets, and then becomes magic for 1 Shroud Core and 2 Goo. Together that is less than upgrading a Small Magic Chest directly.

The Enormous Magic Chest is the exception, because it has no plain version. A placed Huge Magic Chest upgrades into it for 12 Wood Planks, 7 Shroud Slime, 1 Gold Bars and 1 Shroud Radiance. Crafting one new at the Carpenter takes 24 Wood Planks, 15 Shroud Slime, 2 Gold Bars and 1 Shroud Radiance, so upgrading in place costs less here too. The game describes it as “A big and heavy chest that offers fantastic storage space for countless items. The items stored here can be used for crafting purposes from anywhere in the base!”

Every chest recipe when crafted new

An in-place upgrade requires a chest to be placed first. The Workbench makes the Small Chest and Small Magic Chest, with both recipes unlocked after you place a Flame Altar. Craft all other chests at the Carpenter; its chest recipes require a roof overhead.

The Carpenter also makes two other chests. The Wooden Chest costs 5 Wood Planks, 3 Metal Sheets and 3 Charcoal. The Silver Chest costs 3 Silver Bars and 6 Charcoal, and its recipe appears once you own Silver Bars. Neither chest has a magic version.

How to get the Quick Stack Station

The Quick Stack Station moves items from your backpack into matching stacks in nearby Magic Chests. The in-game text reads “Used to transfer items from your backpack to matching magic chest stacks nearby. Magic chests must be placed within a 16 m radius of this station.”

The Carpenter’s side quest Logistics Management has one objective, Craft And Place A Quick Stack Station:

“The Carpenter has built his latest invention — a station that automatically stacks items from your backpack into nearby chests. See it in action for yourself. Craft a Quick Stack Station and place it in your base to complete the quest.”

Craft the station at the Carpenter under a roof. Both sizes have this roof requirement.
Place the station in your base, with your Magic Chests inside its radius. Either size completes the quest.

Logistics Management completes as soon as you place the station. The reward is a Quick Stack Station and 125 XP.
