Runaways is built around one loop. You steal items, haul them back, and pawn them for cash to fund gas, gear, and your run for the border. Ninety-seven distinct items sit inside that loop, and knowing which ones pay and which ones waste your inventory space is the difference between a clean escape and a bag full of junk.
Quick answer: When robbing, grab valuables, electronics, big electronics, and cash. Skip junk and most household items (the Penguin Plushie is the only worthwhile exception). Ammo, armor, backpacks, and medical items are bought at the Pawn Shop.

How items work before you loot
Items behave differently depending on their category. Some are equipped and carried in your inventory, some can only be dragged behind a vehicle, and cash items skip your inventory entirely by adding straight to your balance the moment you pick them up. A few rules decide what is worth your time.
- Firearms need matching ammo, so buy the correct ammo type for your weapon.
- Backpacks raise your carry capacity.
- Body armor adds to your max HP.
- Cash items cannot be equipped. They convert to your balance instantly on pickup.
- Medical items restore large amounts of HP. Food restores less, and some energy drinks let you sprint faster.
- Junk exists only to bait you. It fills inventory slots while being nearly worthless.
- Avoid every household item except the Penguin Plushie for the same reason.

If inventory space is tight, these are the items that pay the most per slot. Valuables and big electronics dominate the top end, and most of them appear inside houses and apartments.

| Laptop | $350 |

Cash items and where they drop
Cash items add straight to your balance the instant you pick them up, so they never take an inventory slot. The biggest payouts come from bank safes, while smaller amounts sit in ATMs, cash registers, and homes.

| Coin | $10 | Almost anywhere |
Cash registers appear at fast food restaurants, gas stations, and shops. ATMs are usually next to gas stations.

Tip: The Medic Pack, Medic Bag, and Bandage can all be stolen from gas stations and shops, which saves you the Pawn Shop cost early on.
Craftables, tools, and vehicle parts
Craftables and vehicle parts are lower value but useful for builds, and most need a car to move. The Turret is the standout, worth $1,250, but it only appears in high-security areas like the prison on the left side of the road near towns in Kansas.
| Item | Category | Sell value | Where to get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turret | Craftable | $1,250 | Prison / high-security areas in Kansas |
| Tire Rim | Vehicle Parts | $225 | Garages and farmsteads |

Household items and junk to skip
Junk exists to waste your time. It occupies slots while returning almost nothing, so leave it where it sits. Household items are the same story with one exception. The Penguin Plushie sells for $567, which is why it is the only household pickup worth grabbing.
| Item | Category | Sell value | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinguin Plushy | Household | $567 | Grab it |
| Dumbbell | Household | $35 | Skip |
| Toaster | Household | $25 | Skip |
| Basketball | Household | $15 | Skip |
| Watering Can | Household | $12 | Skip |
| Box | Household | $10 | Skip |
| Mug | Household | $5 | Skip |
| Life Buoy | Junk | $100 | Skip |
| Bucket | Junk | $15 | Skip |

| Plunger | Junk | $8 | Skip |

The fastest way to build cash is to filter as you loot. Fill your bag with valuables, electronics, and cash first, then bring a car only when a big electronic, painting, or heavy statue is worth the extra risk. Everything you carry should either sell high or keep you alive, and every slot spent on junk is a slot that could have funded your next tank of gas.
