Mortal Shell 2: How to Get the Blackmarrow Key in Shrine of Sorrows

Night Mode in Mushroom Village opens the first-person shrine that pays out a Blackmarrow Key.

Night Mode in Mushroom Village opens the first-person shrine that pays out a Blackmarrow Key.

Mortal Shell 2 hides the Shrine of Sorrows behind Night Mode. In daylight the giant mushroom stays sealed. At night it becomes the game’s only first-person dungeon, a cabin full of locked doors, three Sonata books, and a stew you are meant to drink. Finish the ritual and you leave with a Blackmarrow Key.

Quick answer: Speak to Thestus and choose “Call forth the night,” fast travel to Mushroom Village, accept the giant mushroom’s invitation, collect Moonlight Sonata, Sunlight Sonata, and Starlight Sonata, drink the Alluring Mushroom stew, then enter the basement ritual. The Blackmarrow Key is granted when that sequence ends.

Blackmarrow Key reward

Clearing the shrine consumes the run and drops you back in the swamp with the Blackmarrow Key in your inventory. You also receive the Tooth of Nochte, which Merrick will buy for gold. That is the check that the dungeon actually finished.

Take the key to the elevator room in Marrow Keep. Eight Shade chests sit there, one for each Shell. A chest only opens after you have already unlocked that Shell. Opening one consumes the key and stores a new Shade, including the white Bonegrafted look. Equip it later with Change Shade at any Beacon.

Night Mode requirement

The shrine does not exist until night is on. Thestus, at the top of Marrow Keep, is the switch. He will not offer it until you are carrying the Gloombound Flame from the Arbiter.

Ride the Keep elevator to Thestus. Talk to him and answer YES on “Call forth the night.” Enemies get harder everywhere until you turn day back on, so treat this as a short detour, not a full night run.
Fast travel to the Mushroom Village Beacon while night is still active. If you flip night off before you enter the mushroom, the invitation disappears and you have to call it again.

Mushroom Village path to Shrine of Sorrows

From the Beacon, go right. Follow the path past the dancing villagers, across the first wooden bridge, past the bonfire, then across the second bridge to the cocoon-like mushroom. You can fight the villagers or walk around them. The door you need is the structure ahead, not the village huts.

An engraving on the mushroom reads that daylight keeps the truth sealed. Accept the invitation. The game snaps into first person and drops you on a foggy cliff path. Cross the wooden bridge, hanging corpses and all, and you are inside the Shrine of Sorrows.

Tempered Iron Key and Sonata book locations

The cabin is a short item chain. Miss one book and the stew never appears. Grab things in this order.

ItemWhere it sits
Tempered Iron KeyCabin cauldron, with the severed hand
Moonlight SonataLocked side room, on the corpse on the table
Sunlight SonataSecond room, on the floor or in the bookshelf slot
Starlight SonataTombstone in the snowy yard after the spin
Alluring MushroomBookshelf or box after all three Sonatas are placed
Walk in, read the chair note if you want the flavor, then interact with the cauldron. The Tempered Iron Key comes out of that pot. That is the only way through the barred side door.
Use the Tempered Iron Key on the locked door and take Moonlight Sonata off the body on the table. Leave that room and check the second room next.

In the second room, pick up Sunlight Sonata from the floor. If it is not lying out, slot Moonlight Sonata into the bookshelf. A compartment opens with Sunlight Sonata inside. A recipe on the wall also reminds you that the cauldron still needs its mushroom.

Before you hunt the third book, check the cabin’s main door. A headless corpse falls through. That burst opens the yard you could not reach a moment earlier. A wooden palisade still blocks part of the grounds until that route is clear.

Young general spin for Starlight Sonata

Leave through the now-open wooden gate and go right, behind the tree. A note there names the “young general.” The general is the head on the stake, not a living enemy.

Read the note. It tells you to look at the young general, spin, look again, and spin until the surroundings change. Face the staked head, turn a full circle, look at it again, then turn another full circle. On the next spin the swamp becomes a frozen lake.

In the snow, walk to the gravestone and take Starlight Sonata. That is the last book. Do not stay in the frozen yard looking for a second exit.
Return to the same staked head and repeat the look-and-spin sequence. The swamp comes back. Carry Starlight Sonata into the second room and place all three Sonatas in the bookshelf or box. The compartment gives you the Alluring Mushroom.

Alluring Mushroom stew and Basement Key

The same cauldron that held the Tempered Iron Key is the cooker. The wall recipe is literal. The missing ingredient is the mushroom you just pulled from the books.

Put the Alluring Mushroom in the cauldron and drink. You are thrown into a red, darker version of the grounds. Go back inside the cabin and take the Basement Key off the table.
Use the Basement Key on the door by the entrance and go downstairs. Figures dance around a bonfire. Walk into the fire, or turn around into the grab that ends the scene. A white flash cuts the dungeon and the Blackmarrow Key is added to your inventory as you return to the swamp.

When Shrine of Sorrows does not finish

If the mushroom never invites you, or the key never drops, one of these conditions is still false.

ProblemResult
Night Mode is offThe mushroom stays sealed
No Gloombound FlameThestus never offers night
A Sonata book is missingThe Alluring Mushroom never appears
You never drink the stewThe Basement Key does not spawn
You leave before the ritual endsNo Blackmarrow Key is granted
That Shell is still lockedThe matching Keep chest will not open

Once the key is in your inventory, the shrine is done. One key opens one Shade chest. If you want a Shade for every Shell, you will need more Blackmarrow Keys from elsewhere. For this dungeon, success is simple. The key appears, the Tooth of Nochte appears, and a chest in the Marrow Keep elevator room finally unlocks.
