Mortal Shell 2: Smert First Memory Playthrough and Cutscene

Finish the Prophet's Rest blood offerings, then survive Smert's first memory to claim the shell.

Finish the Prophet’s Rest blood offerings, then survive Smert’s first memory to claim the shell.

Smert’s first memory is the interactive cutscene that unlocks his shell in Mortal Shell 2. You do not find him on a menu. You walk into a ritual at Prophet’s Rest, fill three blood offerings, and then fight a spectral Hierarch Harax inside the memory itself.

Quick answer: From the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon, climb the slope into Prophet’s Rest, turn all three blood offerings red, and interact with Smert’s corpse. Use Question the Hierarch on the hologram, defeat spectral Harax, and wait for NEW SHELL DISCOVERED.

Prophet’s Rest location

Start at the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon. Head up the slope to Prophet’s Rest. Cultists are already at work around Smert’s body, and the first memory will not start until that ritual is broken.

Clear the cultists in the area before you touch the corpse. The body is the interact point for the memory, but the three blood offerings around it have to be finished first.

Blood offerings to unlock the memory

Prophet’s Rest has three small circles that act as blood offerings. Each one must glow red before Smert’s corpse will give you the first memory. A filled offering stays filled if you die, and a beacon sits close enough that a failed attempt is only a short run back.

MethodResult
Kill an enemy inside a circleThat offering turns red
Interact with a circle yourselfThe offering fills, and you lose your current shell

Note: Killing an enemy inside each circle is enough. You do not need to stand in the circle and bleed into it unless you want to.

Interrupt the ritual and defeat the cultists around Smert. Leave the corpse alone until the offerings are done.
Fill the first circle by killing an enemy inside it, or by interacting with the circle if no enemy is in range. Confirm that the offering is glowing red before you move on.
Repeat the same action on the remaining two circles. The memory will not open while any offering is still dark.

If the corpse does nothing, at least one offering is still unfilled. The interact prompt on Smert appears only after all three circles are red.

Smert first memory cutscene

Interact with Smert’s corpse once every blood offering is glowing red. That starts the first memory playthrough instead of a normal pickup.

The memory opens on Smert walking a misty, watery path lined with glowing pillars. He moves toward a statue while speaking with Hierarch Harax. Their talk turns on the Great Mother, Makka.

A white flash cuts the walk short. Smert is then face to face with a glowing hologram of Harax, hammer in hand. This is still the memory, not a return to the overworld, and the next prompt is what turns the scene into a fight.

Question the Hierarch fight

The hologram will not become a real encounter until you use the on-screen prompt. Walk up to Harax and press the control shown for Question the Hierarch. On keyboard that prompt reads E. On a controller it can show as X.

Use Question the Hierarch on the hologram. Smert challenges Harax and strikes. That hit is what starts the spectral battle.

Hearing Makka is the end of the encounter, not a second phase. Another white flash closes the memory. If you never used Question the Hierarch, the fight does not start and the shell does not unlock.

Smert shell unlock confirmation

After the second white flash, the game shows NEW SHELL DISCOVERED and the name SMERT. A SWITCH TO SMERT? prompt follows, with YES and NO. That screen is the proof the first memory finished correctly.

Choosing YES puts you in Smert immediately. Choosing NO keeps your current shell and still adds Smert to the list. Either choice means the memory is done.

The same unlock flow then lists his starting kit. Miracle is the shell ability. Deadly Revelation is the shell passive. Chaos and Faith are the two status effects tied to those skills.

NameTypeWhat the unlock screen shows
MiracleShell AbilitySmert enters a Fight Stance. Unarmed attacks inflict Chaos. Miracle can be forced into Overtime by sacrificing additional Health.
ChaosStatusInflicts random reactions when it triggers.
FaithStatusWhile in this stance, melee attacks regenerate additional Resolve.
Deadly RevelationShell PassiveAt 30% health or lower, Smert has Faith.

If NEW SHELL DISCOVERED never appears, the memory did not complete. The usual breaks are an unfilled blood offering, a skipped Question the Hierarch prompt, or leaving the spectral fight before Harax goes down.

Once that prompt is on screen, Smert is collected. You can switch into him at any time after that and take the shell back into the caverns.
