Because the floor controls everything, the fastest way to a better fusion is to raise the weakest droid, not the strongest. Find the lowest-variant droid in your planned combination and upgrade it to a higher variant before you fuse.
Lift that floor and the entire result climbs with it. There is no benefit to over-investing in the top droid while a Common or Galactic-tier unit stays in the mix, since that low droid caps the reward. Spend on the bottom of the group first.

Where the rule stops: random vs unique fusions

Unique fusions call for specific, lower-end droids to produce a specific exclusive droid. The Mo-Trak Rainbow Mythic, for example, comes out of a fixed recipe rather than from copying the weakest input’s tier. These exclusive droids never spawn on the Sandcrawler conveyor, so a set recipe is the only route to them.
Keep that split in mind before you commit droids. For a random fusion, plan around the floor and upgrade the weakest unit. For a unique droid like Mo-Trak, gather the exact droids its recipe demands and do not worry about their variant tier at all.
