Breathedge 2 Gladiator Achievement: How to Defeat the Bum

Win the Battle for the Mattress tug-of-war in the Outskirts to lock in a permanent +10 maximum health bonus.

Win the Battle for the Mattress tug-of-war in the Outskirts to lock in a permanent +10 maximum health bonus.

Gladiator is one of the few achievements in Breathedge 2 that also hands you a permanent stat upgrade, and it is tied to a single optional encounter. Somewhere in the Outskirts, a character called the Bum is asleep on a mattress you happen to want. Taking it from him is a contest, not a conversation.

Quick answer: Find the Bum sleeping inside the train carriage in the Outskirts, hit him with the tool in your hands to start the Battle for the Mattress, then repeatedly press Pull until you win the tug-of-war. The Gladiator achievement pops on the winning round and grants +10 maximum health.

Where to find the Bum in the Outskirts

The encounter sits inside a train carriage parked in the Outskirts, the area plastered with signage such as “Give us fuel!” and the reminder that magnetic boots are mandatory. There is no marker or quest prompt pointing you toward him, so you need to physically walk in and look. The Bum is lying down on the mattress, asleep, and he will stay that way until you make the first move.

How to start the Battle for the Mattress

Walk up to the sleeping Bum inside the carriage and get close enough that the mattress becomes the object under your reticle. Nothing happens if you simply talk to him or stand around.
Hit him with whatever tool you are holding. That single swing wakes him up and immediately launches the Battle for the Mattress prompt, which is the game’s tug-of-war minigame.
Once the contest screen appears, the interaction offers two options, Pull and Give Up. Press Pull repeatedly and keep pressing. Give Up ends the attempt without the achievement.

How the tug-of-war rounds work

The fight runs across several short rounds rather than one long mash. Lose a round and the screen flashes DEFEAT with a line about not losing the last scraps of your dignity, but that is not the end of the encounter. The contest simply continues, and you can drop the opening round and still take the mattress by winning the rounds that follow.

Winning rounds show VICTORY along with the Bum’s commentary about who claimed the mattress first. Keep hammering Pull through each one until the final round resolves in your favor. The whole exchange takes roughly a minute.

Gladiator reward: +10 maximum health

The moment the last round goes your way, the NEW ACHIEVEMENT! GLADIATOR banner appears, a diary entry is added, and the health bonus is applied. The mattress itself is yours to take afterward.

To confirm it registered, open your menu and check the achievement entry. Gladiator lists its requirement as defeating the Bum and spells out the bonus as “Vaccinated by Svi. Maximum health +10,” so if that line is showing, the upgrade is already active on your character.

Why the Gladiator achievement does not unlock

  • You never hit the Bum. The Battle for the Mattress only starts when you strike him while he is asleep, so approaching him alone does nothing.
  • You picked Give Up. Selecting it ends the contest and leaves the mattress with him.
  • You stopped pressing Pull. Dropping one round is fine, but the achievement fires only on the final winning round of the tug-of-war.

Tip: keep an eye on the round result banners rather than the achievement pop-up. VICTORY on the last round is your signal that everything landed, and the diary entry that follows is a second confirmation you can check later.

It is a small, easily missed encounter in an area most players pass through quickly, and the payoff is one of the more useful permanent buffs available early on. Ten extra points of maximum health is worth a swing at a sleeping man.
