Palia: How to Complete Into the Fire in the Temple of the Flames

Track the intruder, fish the Cosmos Protocol Key out of the lava, and clear all three Trial of Courage obstacle runs.

Track the intruder, fish the Cosmos Protocol Key out of the lava, and clear all three Trial of Courage obstacle runs.

Into the Fire is the main quest that sends you and Subira into the Temple of the Flames, chasing the same intruder who tampered with the console in the Temple of the Waves. It mixes light investigation with one fishing detour and three timed obstacle runs, and it ends the moment you report back to Subira.

Quick answer: Follow the sooty footprints up the ladders, read the Notes on the Cosmos Protocol tablet, fish the Cosmos Protocol Key out of the lava-filled Pyroflow pipe with no bait, unlock the Trial of Courage door, then shoot every brazier symbol with your bow and pickaxe through the crumbling walls until you reach the console.

Into the Fire requirements and rewards in Palia

Subira hands out the quest once you finish Troubled Waters, so she must already be unlocked as a villager. Strange Things Afoot and Troubled Waters both need to be marked complete in the Quests tab of the main menu before Into the Fire appears in your log.

Bring a fishing rod and make sure your bow and pickaxe are equipped and repaired. Arrows are supplied mid-quest, but the pickaxe is entirely on you.

Tools you need before entering the Temple of the Flames

  • Fishing rod — any rod works for pulling the key out of the Pyroflow pipe, and you do not need bait.
  • Bow — used to shoot the symbols under the braziers in every obstacle room.
  • Pickaxe — breaks the cracked stone walls that block the later moving platforms.
  • Glider — helpful for crossing the lava near the grate while following the footprint trail.

Tracking the intruder’s footprints inside the temple

Travel to Bahari Bay and head into the Temple of the Flames. Subira waits in the main hub, and approaching her starts the conversation that sets the investigation objective.

Look for sparkling objects around the hub. The first set of sooty footprints sits near Subira, and inspecting it points you toward the next set.

Follow the trail to the left of the main room, gliding over the lava beside the wall grate. There are seven sets of prints in total, and each one has to be inspected in order.
Climb every ladder along the route until you reach the locked door marked with the fire symbol. Nearby you will find a Mysterious Rock, a spent “Fly” Runestone that explains how the intruder skipped the maze, and a tablet called Notes on the Cosmos Protocol.
Read the tablet. It describes how an engineer’s pet snatched the console key and dropped it into the Pyroflow pipes, and reading it is what advances the quest to the fishing stage.

Note: Two optional clues are worth grabbing while you are here. The Kitsuu shrine holds a pile of Stolen Goods, a stack of potion bottles topped with a silver bracelet, and the runestone at the maze entrance counts as evidence too. Handing both to Subira changes her dialogue at the end of the quest.

Fishing the Cosmos Protocol Key out of the Pyroflow pipe

Drop back down to the ledge below the locked door and find the pipe full of lava. A fishing sign is posted right beside it, which is how you know you have the correct spot.
Equip your rod and cast without any bait. The Cosmos Protocol Key is the guaranteed catch here, and it lands in your inventory as a quest item.

Climb back up to the fire-marked door and use the key on it. The door leads into the room known as The Trial of Courage.
Speak to Subira inside. She discusses what the Cosmos Protocol might be, then hands over 99 Makeshift Arrow before you tackle the braziers ahead.

Clearing the three Trial of Courage obstacle rooms

All three rooms run on the same rule. Shooting the symbol on a statue lights the brazier above it, and lighting every brazier in a stretch drops the barrier at the far end. The difficulty comes from doing that while a platform carries you over lava.

First room: Four braziers, no hazards

Walk to the ledge and look across the lava. A statue with a symbol sits opposite you, so draw your bow and hit it before you move.
Step onto the moving platform and shoot the remaining three symbols as you pass them. A horn sounds once all four are lit, and the door at the end of the passage opens.

Second room: Symbols behind pink lasers

Through the door, shoot the statue that sits ringed by lasers before boarding anything. Getting this one out of the way first saves you an awkward shot later.
Drop onto the moving platform and line up the two remaining symbols between laser sweeps. Touching a beam knocks you back to the start of the run, so fire during the gaps rather than rushing.

Jump the final laser instead of trying to shoot past it. Then climb the ladder at the end and move into the next room.

Third room: Swapping between pickaxe and bow

A cracked rock wall blocks the path immediately. Pull out the pickaxe and break it to continue.
Shoot the symbol directly ahead of you, then board the moving platform. From here the room alternates, breaking a wall with the pickaxe, then shooting the next symbol with the bow.
After smashing the first wall, hop off onto the floor where the statue stands. Standing still lets you swap to the bow, fire, swap back to the pickaxe, and rejoin the platform without fumbling the tool wheel mid-ride.
Ride the last stretch, which combines cracked walls with active laser beams. Break what blocks you, dodge the beams, and take the platform to the far side.

Tip: Falling into the lava or clipping a laser respawns you a short distance back rather than at the start of the temple, so repeated attempts cost little time.

Reading the console user logs to finish the quest

Approach the Ancient Human console with the fire symbol at the end of the corridor and interact with it. The menu offers [PROTOCOLS], [MESSAGES], [USER LOGS], and [EXIT].
Open [USER LOGS]. This is the entry that advances the objective, and it shows the intruder listed as USER: ERROR disengaging the Cosmos Protocol lockdown with a timestamp of -0.5 days.
Exit the console and speak to Subira, who follows you into the room. Explaining what you found closes out the quest.

You will know it worked because the game teleports you out of the temple and Up in the Air appears in your quest log, pointing you at the Temple of the Gales. The 15 Renown lands at the same moment.

Why the quest can stall

SymptomCause and fix
Fishing spot gives nothingThe Notes on the Cosmos Protocol tablet has not been read yet. Read it at the top of the ladder route first.
Door with the fire symbol will not openThe Cosmos Protocol Key is still in the Pyroflow pipe. Fish it up from the pipe marked with the fishing sign.
Barrier stays up at the end of a platform runOne brazier symbol is still unlit. Backtrack along the run and check each statue.
Objective still says investigate the templeA set of footprints was skipped. There are seven, and each must be inspected.
Quest will not complete after the consoleOnly [USER LOGS] updates the objective. Reopen the console and select that option.

Subira picks the trail back up as soon as you finish, and it leads straight to the Temple of the Gales. Keep your pickaxe repaired for that leg, since the temple chain leans on it heavily from here on.
