Scream And Run: How to Find Keys and Backpacks to Escape

The exact controls, lobby settings, and objective you need to unlock the exit before the Cat in the Hat catches you.

The exact controls, lobby settings, and objective you need to unlock the exit before the Cat in the Hat catches you.

You wake up locked inside a dark school, and the Cat in the Hat is roaming the halls looking for you. Your only way out is to search abandoned classrooms and backpacks for hidden keys, then use them to open the exit. Everything below covers how to move, how to survive, and exactly what unlocks the escape in Scream And Run.

Quick answer: Search backpacks scattered through the school to collect the hidden keys, then take them to the locked exit to open it and escape the Cat in the Hat.

How to escape: keys and backpacks

The exit stays locked until you gather the keys hidden around the building. Keys are stored inside backpacks placed throughout the classrooms and hallways, so clearing rooms one at a time is the core loop.

Move room to room and check every backpack you find. Each one may hold a key you need, so do not skip corners or side rooms.
Collect the keys while avoiding the Cat in the Hat. If it catches you mid-search, you lose progress toward reaching the exit.
Take the keys to the locked exit and use them to open it. Getting out unlocks the Escape The Cat In The Hat badge, which confirms a successful run.

Note: Liking the game and joining the group grants an extra life, which gives you one more chance if you get caught.

Movement controls

Staying quiet and low is how you slip past the Cat in the Hat. A speed meter sits in the bottom-left corner of the screen, so you can see how loud your movement is at any moment. Slower movement keeps you harder to detect.

Crouching and crawling let you fit through tight spaces and stay under cover. Sliding with Shift + C helps you cover ground quickly through dark hallways without committing to a full, noisy sprint. Running is the fastest option but also the most likely to draw the Cat in the Hat straight to you.

Game modes and lobby setup

Three modes launch from the main menu, so you can pick the pace you want before heading in.

You can also build a custom lobby. Open the Create New Lobby menu, enter a lobby name, and set the max players anywhere from 1 to 20. From there, toggle the options you want before starting.

  • Friends Only restricts the lobby to people on your list.
  • No Power starts the round with the lights already off.
  • Hide & Seek switches the lobby to the hide-and-seek style of play.

Standard servers hold up to 50 players. If you want to hear other players, keep your game volume above zero. A Voice Chat Not Audible warning appears when your volume is set to 0, telling you to turn it up.

Power outages and paid events

Sometimes a storm rolls in and the lights go out. When the school goes dark, your flashlight becomes essential, and you toggle it with the F key. Moving without light makes navigation harder but can also help you stay hidden.

Certain events can be triggered with Robux. For 100 Robux, a player can cause a thunderstorm that disables the lights for one minute, or spawn an additional Cat in the Hat into the round. These raise the difficulty for everyone in the server.

Escaping while the power is off is the hardest challenge in the game. Doing it unlocks the Escape The Cat In The Hat With No Power On badge, an extremely rare reward that confirms you cleared a blackout run.

The whole game comes down to a simple rhythm. Stay low, keep the speed meter in check, clear backpacks for keys, and make your break for the exit when you have what you need. If the lights fail, lean on your flashlight and keep moving toward the door.
