BULKHEAD is running one more closed beta for WARDOGS before the shooter hits Steam Early Access, and it is being framed as a scale test rather than a showcase. The developer wants a full server load hammering the 100-player, three-team matches so any breakage happens now instead of on launch day.
Quick answer: Pre-purchase WARDOGS on Steam to get guaranteed closed beta access from September 3, 2026 at 18:00 UTC until September 5, 2026 at 08:00 UTC. The beta opens during The FPS Games Show, which streams live on Twitch at the same time.
Release time: September 3, 2026 at 18:00 UTC (7PM BST)
WARDOGS closed beta start time and end time
The beta window is short and fixed. Servers come online as the broadcast begins and stay up through the weekend’s first hours, then close.
| Event | Date and time |
|---|---|
| Closed beta opens | September 3, 2026, 18:00 UTC (7PM BST) |
| Closed beta closes | September 5, 2026, 08:00 UTC |
| The FPS Games Show (Twitch) | September 3, 2026, 18:00 UTC |
| Early Access launch | September 10, 2026 |
An earlier playtest weekend ran from August 21 to 23 for people who had already pre-ordered. That one is done; the September window is the final test before Early Access.

What the beta is testing
This is a load test, and BULKHEAD is being blunt about it. The pitch to players is to overload the servers and find the failure points — the trailer’s on-screen text runs from “A GENUINE TEST TO…” straight into “BREAK. OUR. SHIT.” and “OBLITERATE OUR SERVERS.” Streaming is encouraged rather than embargoed.
Practically, that means the useful thing you can do in the window is play at peak hours, pile into the same objectives, and report problems on the Steam discussion boards rather than treating rough edges as a reason to bail.

What you can play during the beta
The core mode borrows from King of the Hill. Up to 100 players are split across three teams fighting over a randomized 2x2km Control Zone placed somewhere inside a 256km² map, set in the derelict industrial mountains of Eastern Europe. Whichever team has the most players inside the zone scores points, and the first to 100 points takes the match. Because the zone location shifts, no two matches open the same way.
Combined arms is the other half of it. Infantry fights sit alongside tanks, helicopters, light vehicles and artillery, and buildings are destructible — you can drop an apartment block with rocket launchers or drive a tank through a town. The reverse is also true: squads can build and fortify positions, including forward operating bases at chokepoints.

The cash system
Every player begins with $10,000. Each life you buy a loadout from a pool of weapons, gear, utility items and vehicles, and cash carries over between matches rather than resetting. Team actions pay out — reviving a squadmate, ferrying friendlies to the objective, holding the zone — and chasing the Hot Zone doubles your earnings. Saving up for an expensive purchase and spending it at the right moment is the intended risk.

Proximity voice chat ties the whole thing together, so nearby players — including enemies — can hear you.
Early Access launch on September 10 and pricing
WARDOGS enters Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026, one week after the beta closes. BULKHEAD expects to stay in Early Access for roughly one to two years and has said it does not want that period stretching out.
The Early Access build is described as fully playable: 100-player three-team matches, large maps with dynamic objective zones, cash and XP progression, vehicles and logistics, and proximity voice chat. Planned additions during that period include more maps, weapons and vehicle types such as fighter jets, deeper progression, a seasonal meta game, and additional objective variations. The price is set lower for Early Access and may go up closer to the full release.

If you are on the fence about paying up front for beta access, BULKHEAD’s own suggestion is to watch player impressions from the August weekend and its “10 Reasons NOT to Buy WARDOGS” dev vlog before committing. Pre-ordering buys you a 38-hour window on servers that are deliberately being pushed to their limit — worth knowing before you decide that is what you want out of it.
