Anime Expeditions: How to Get and Build Dark Mage (Sovereign)

The evolution materials, Unbound trait, equipment, and targeting trick that turn this Mythic into a full-map damage source.

Dark Mage (Sovereign) sits in the top group of Anime Expeditions units, and it is the Mythic most worth pouring resources into if you want a single carry that clears entire lanes on its own. The unit has two damage elements, and one of them can be locked on permanently with a targeting setting most players never touch. Done correctly, it stops being a normal tower and turns into passive area damage that covers whole spawn paths.

Quick answer: Evolve Dark Mage into Dark Mage (Sovereign), roll the Unbound trait, equip Dark Scepter, Magic Book, and Shinigami Sword, then set its targeting priority to None the moment it flips into Lightning Magic so it never switches back to Ice.

How the Ice and Lightning modes work

The unit’s passive gives it two skill elements, which means it gets around enemy resistances that shut down single-element carries. Ice Magic handles slowing and freezing. Lightning Magic is the burst side, and it is the reason the unit ranks so high.

Dark Mage builds attack stacks as it fires. At 8 stacks, its Ice Barrage converts into Lightning Magic. In that state it is dealing continuous damage along the path rather than firing at one target at a time.

ModeWhat it doesWhen it is active
Ice MagicFreezes and slows enemies in rangeDefault state, and any time the unit attacks normally
Lightning MagicContinuous area damage across the path in rangeAfter 8 attack stacks, held indefinitely if targeting is set to None

Here is the part that matters. Because the mode swap is tied to attacking, letting the unit keep attacking eventually rotates it back to Freeze. Setting the targeting priority to None stops the attack rotation, freezing the unit in its Lightning state. It still damages everything inside its radius, so you lose nothing and gain permanent full area coverage.

Evolution requirements for Dark Mage (Sovereign)

Open the Evolve menu and select Dark Mage. The screen lists every material needed for the Sovereign form and flags anything you are short on when you try Quick Craft.

Pick up the Magical Amulet from the Villain Invasion Event Shop if you do not already own it. This is the piece most players are missing, and it is a straight purchase rather than a drop grind.
Confirm the evolution. The unit’s card updates to Dark Mage (Sovereign) with the dual-element passive attached, which is your confirmation it worked.
Go to Unit Ascension and sacrifice duplicate Dark Mage copies along with Spirit Stones. Ascension is separate from evolution and pushes the stat ceiling higher, so hold onto duplicates instead of dismissing them.

Getting the Unbound trait

Unbound is the trait this build is designed around. It carries roughly a 0.1% roll rate, raises the stat ceiling, and adjusts placement limits, which is what pushes Dark Mage from strong to meta. You are not realistically rolling it by luck, so you are rolling toward pity.

Open Trait Reroll and check how many Trait Crystals you still need to reach pity on the unit. The counter tells you exactly how far off you are.
Run the Daily Challenge. Clearing School Grounds Act 1 on Hard Mode pays out 10 Trait Crystals, which is a fast, repeatable top-up when you are a few crystals short.
Reroll until pity triggers. Junk results such as Speed 1, Range 1, or Precision 1 along the way still count toward the counter, and hitting pity guarantees the Mythic trait.

Shiny status and stat potential transfers

Two transfer systems let you move progress from units you do not use onto the copy you are building, so nothing is wasted.

Use Shiny Transfer to move shiny status from a duplicate onto your Unbound Dark Mage. You keep the trait roll and gain the shiny bonus on the same card.
Open Stat Potential and transfer your best rolls in. High-grade DMG potential and a strong SPA grade from other units can both be moved across, and a Z-rank damage roll paired with an SSS-rank SPA roll is the kind of result worth locking down.

Note: only spend rerolls on units you intend to keep long term. Rerolls burned on placeholder units are the most common way players stall out before finishing a carry.

Best equipment and where to farm it

The loadout is Dark Scepter, Magic Book, and Shinigami Sword. Dark Scepter is the unit-specific piece and the only one that requires real farming.

ItemHow to get itStat to chase
Dark ScepterCrow Hideout Act 1, Hard Mode dropRange, then lock it
Magic BookForged in the ArmoryMagical damage
Shinigami SwordStandard damage slot fillerDamage

Expect the Dark Scepter to take a while. Repeated Hard Mode runs of Crow Hideout Act 1 are normal, and clearing it well past a dozen times before the drop appears is not unusual.

Once you have it, head to the Armory and reroll its stats. Range is the roll that matters most here, because the Lightning mode damages everything inside the radius. A roll near 87% Range is a strong result, and you should lock it immediately so later rerolls cannot overwrite it. Forge the Magic Book afterward and roll for magical damage stats.

A finished build looks roughly like Level 80, 3.4k DMG, 4.8s SPA, and 29.8 RNG with Unbound and shiny applied. Range is the stat to keep improving after that point.

Placement and targeting during a run

Place Dark Mage where its radius touches as much path as possible. On School Grounds, spots around the central buildings cover the entrance and exit lanes at the same time, which doubles the value of a single placement.

Let it attack normally until it transforms into Lightning mode. It needs those 8 stacks first, so do not touch the settings early.
Switch its targeting priority to None as soon as the transformation happens. The unit stops attacking, stays locked in Lightning, and keeps striking everything on the path inside its range.

You will know it worked when lightning continues hitting enemies across the whole path with no visible attack animation cycling, and the unit never reverts to Freeze. If it does revert, the targeting priority was set back to a normal option, or it was changed before the transformation triggered.

If you want to test the setup before committing materials, the Testing Zone sandbox lets you place the unit, force wave spawns, and watch the Lightning coverage hold across long defenses without risking a real run. Once the trait and Range roll are locked in, this is a Mythic that stays relevant well past the point where most units get replaced, and it pairs naturally with other magical carries in the roster. You can find the game on its Roblox experience page.
