The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Defeat Xanthe (The Dark Mistress Trophy)

The Cycle of Love ends with a lantern puzzle, a blood-magic duel, and one decision about Xanthe's daughter.

The Cycle of Love ends with a lantern puzzle, a blood-magic duel, and one decision about Xanthe’s daughter.

Xanthe is the one member of the Vrakhiri Court you cannot simply walk up to and stab. Her manor at Howling Keep is sealed behind vines and enchanted statues, and even reaching the front door requires an invitation you have to earn by making her furious. The whole encounter plays out inside The Cycle of Love, and it ends with a bronze trophy called The Dark Mistress.

Quick answer: Complete Xanthe’s Court Activities until her anger peaks, take the lantern the guards hand Coen the next day, use it on the statue at her manor entrance, gather two more lanterns inside, place both on the statues at the locked room, then beat Xanthe and let the post-fight conversation finish.

How to start The Cycle of Love in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The quest does not appear on its own. It is the payoff for antagonising Xanthe through her Court Activities, tracked from the Court menu, until her anger hits maximum. The following day, guards approach Coen and hand over one of Xanthe’s Lanterns, because nobody enters the Boyaress’ estate uninvited.

Xanthe’s Lantern statues: how the manor doors actually work

Every sealed door in the manor is choked with vines, and every vine is tied to a glowing statue with empty hands. Put a lantern in a statue’s hands and the vines near it retract. Take the lantern back and they grow again.

Most doors need a single lantern. The room Xanthe is waiting in needs two at once, which is the entire reason the manor turns into a shuffling puzzle. There are three lanterns available in total.

LanternWhere it is
The invitationGiven to Coen by guards; used on the statue at the manor entrance
Pottery room lanternUpstairs to the south, in the room with pottery and a fireplace, already held by a statue
Iasmina’s lanternThe northern upstairs room, sitting beside Iasmina
Shed lanternInside the courtyard shed, past the west statue on the ground floor

Note: the pottery room statue is the important one. Feeding it a lantern clears every nearby vine, including the ones over that room’s own doorway. If you end up locked outside it, hand a lantern to the outer statue, walk in and hand a second lantern to the inner statue, then take the outer lantern back. The door stays open.

Manor route: from the front gate to Xanthe’s locked room

Deal with the enemies gathered outside the manor, then place your lantern in the entrance statue’s hands. The vines pull back and the estate opens up. More enemies are waiting inside, so do not sprint in blind.

Head south and climb the stairs to the room full of pottery with a fireplace. A statue in here is already holding a lantern. Leave it exactly where it is for now.
Continue into the northern room upstairs to find Iasmina. Talk to her, then pick up the lantern sitting next to her when the conversation ends.

Leave a lantern with the pottery room statue so that wing stays open, then go back down to the entrance. Turn west and hand a lantern to the statue there to unlock the way into the courtyard.
Cross the courtyard, put down the angry spirits that attack, and step into the shed. Grab the lantern inside and vines immediately seal the door behind you. This is scripted, not a mistake.
Open the trapdoor in the shed floor and drop into the flooded dungeon underneath, where the missing girls ended up. Fight through the ghouls and the wolf pack down here.

Loot the corpses on the way out. The one ringed by green fireflies carries the Key to the Kennels. Keep pushing through the passages until you surface back at the estate entrance.

Take the lantern back from the statue near the courtyard and survive the horde that spawns in response. You should now be carrying two lanterns, with the third still lighting the pottery room.
Head back upstairs to the locked room and place both lanterns on the statues flanking it. The door opens on a masked girl singing, who turns out to be Xanthe’s daughter. Xanthe walks in shortly after and the fight starts.

Xanthe, the Dark Mistress boss fight: attacks and counters

Before the swords come out you get two dialogue prompts, “Who are you?” and “What happened to you?”, which fill in who the girl in the mask is. Then Xanthe attacks. She fights almost entirely with red blood magic and constant teleports, so the fight is about reading her recovery frames rather than trading hits.

AttackHow to handle it
Tracking blood projectilesShe blinks away and fires bolts that follow you. Dodge-roll sideways as they close in rather than backing up.
Red circle on the groundAn area explosion. Roll clear of the marked radius before it goes off.
Teleport repositioningWait for the teleport animation to end, then close the gap and land a melee combo before she vanishes again.
Melee swingsWatch the icon. A shield means you can block or parry it; a skull means it is unblockable and you need to move.

Pressure her hard between teleports. Dragging the fight out only gives her more openings to reposition and start another projectile volley.

Spare or kill Xanthe: what each choice changes

Beating her does not end The Cycle of Love. A conversation follows, and Coen decides how it closes. If you only care about the trophy, take her deal.

ChoiceOutcome
Spare XantheCoen promises to leave her daughter alone and is thrown out of the manor. An alliance forms, and she lets him pass safely during the final battle at the castle. The epilogue mural shows she keeps killing women wherever she goes to keep her daughter alive.
Refuse her helpThe exchange runs through “I don’t want your help” and “Go to Hell, Xanthe” to a killing blow. Her daughter’s fate is then left to Coen, who can leave her alive or mercy-kill her in her room.

Tip: drop a manual save before the post-fight dialogue. Both endings are reachable from that one save, so you can see the alliance play out and still reload for the other version.

How to confirm The Dark Mistress trophy unlocked

The Cycle of Love closes out in the journal, Coen picks up XP and skill points, and the bronze trophy pops with the description “Neutralise the threat posed by Xanthe.” Winning the fight on its own does nothing. If the trophy has not appeared, the post-fight conversation has not finished resolving yet, so let the dialogue and the cutscene play all the way out.

With Xanthe dealt with, one more of Brencis’s court is off the board, and the sandbox opens back up for whichever of the remaining Court Activities you have been putting off.
