The Blood of Dawnwalker: Stone Key Location and A Hero’s End Quest

Find the Stone Key in the Cathedral Treasury and open the hidden coffin in the Ancient Ruin for The Hand of Fate.

Find the Stone Key in the Cathedral Treasury and open the hidden coffin in the Ancient Ruin for The Hand of Fate.

The Stone Key is a special item in The Blood of Dawnwalker that opens a sealed coffin during the A Hero’s End quest. Inside that coffin sits The Hand of Fate shortsword and an Ancient Hero’s Ring, plus a couple of smaller pickups. The letters and notes scattered around the quest never spell out where the key goes, which is why so many players get stuck holding it. You collect it in one place and spend it in another.

Quick answer: Grab the Stone Key from the hidden lower room in the Svartrau Cathedral Treasury, then use it at night on the sealed coffin deep inside the Ancient Ruin during A Hero’s End.

Stone Key location in the Cathedral Treasury

The Stone Key sits in a concealed room beneath the Svartrau Cathedral Treasury. You reach the Treasury through the northern garden of the Cathedral Complex, and you need the Treasury Key before the door will open.

Collect the Treasury Key from the Belltower inside the Cathedral Complex. It rests on a ledger in the northwestern room, and you inspect the key to pick it up.
Head to the northern garden of the Cathedral and use the Treasury Key to unlock the Cathedral Treasury door.
Go through the second door and turn left. Interact with the bookshelf and push it to reveal a hidden room behind it.
Climb down the ladder and open the hatch at the bottom.
Switch on Focus Mode and inspect the yellow, golden-hued items. The Stone Key rests on the stone in front of the cross. While you are down there, loot the rest of the Treasury for Silver Valuables, which you can later trade for Denarius at the Silver Merchant in Svartau City.

Note: The Treasury also holds the Phial of Xanthe’s Blood. Drinking it unlocks the Blood Surge ability in the Vampirism skill tree, so it is worth grabbing on the same visit.

Where to use the Stone Key in A Hero’s End

The key opens a hidden coffin inside the Ancient Ruin. The In the Name of the Father quest helps kick off A Hero’s End, but you do not need Father Florin’s cooperation to get in. An Ancient Key sits on the barrel beside him, and it unlocks the Ruin on its own. If you decide to fight Father Florin instead, you can still explore the Ruin and reach the coffin.

Two things matter before you start. It must be night, and you need the Shadowstep ability to clear the gaps inside.

Wait until nighttime, then take the Ancient Key from the barrel next to Father Florin and use it to open the Ancient Ruin.
Squeeze through the narrow gap between the walls to get inside.
Defeat the Ancient Guardian waiting in the first area.
Move left, walk to the end of the road, and turn left again.
Use Shadowstep to cross the gap in the ground without dying, move forward, then Shadowstep again to climb the wall at the far end.
Move forward and Shadowstep north toward the open door.
Defeat the Kobolds in the room ahead.
Step inside and use the Stone Key on the coffin. It unlocks and hands over the rewards.

How to confirm it worked

The coffin only accepts the Stone Key once you are standing in front of it inside the final room. When the interaction succeeds, the coffin opens and the loot drops straight into your inventory. If the prompt to use the key does not appear, the two most common reasons are running the quest during the day or not owning the Stone Key yet. Return during the night and confirm the key is in your inventory before heading back into the Ancient Ruin.
