Leveling in Fisch comes down to two things: how fast you can land a catch, and how many multipliers are sitting on top of that catch when it lands. Rods control both. A rod with weak lure speed slows every cast, and a rod without an XP passive or the right enchantment leaves a huge chunk of experience on the table.
Quick answer: Buy the Carbon Rod at Moosewood for 2,000 C$, progress through Steady and Rod of the Depths, then target the Great Rod of Oscar at Level 250 with 2,500,000 C$ and enchant it with Clever for a 2.25x XP multiplier. Perfect catches add another 1.5x on top.
How XP multipliers stack in Fisch
Experience is not just a flat number per fish. A perfect catch, where the fish icon stays inside the white bar for the whole minigame, pays 1.5x XP plus 10 C$. That bonus applies no matter which rod you hold, which is why control and resilience stats matter for leveling even though they never appear on an XP tooltip.
On top of that, the Clever enchantment adds a 2.25x XP multiplier, and Wise adds 1.2x if you have a Cosmic Relic to spend. Enchanting happens at Keepers Altar, which you reach by visiting the Statue of Sovereignty and paying 400 C$ to Cole. Because those multipliers are enchantment-based, the “best XP rod” is usually whichever strong rod you can afford to enchant with Clever and still catch fish quickly.

Early XP rods: Carbon, Steady, and Reinforced
The Flimsy Rod you start with exists to teach the cast, shake, and reel loop. Replace it the moment you have 2,000 C$. The Carbon Rod from the Moosewood merchant is the first purchase that changes how the game feels, with balanced stats and a 600 kg weight cap that covers everything in the starting waters.
That 600 kg ceiling is also the reason you move on. The Steady Rod costs 7,000 C$ from the Roslit Bay blacksmith and swaps lure speed for a 250,000 kg cap and 30% resilience, which makes the reeling bar much calmer and perfect catches far more repeatable. Its slow bite is annoying, but every perfect catch is a 1.5x XP payout, so the trade is worth it while you are still under Level 50.

The Reinforced Rod in Desolate Deep costs 20,000 C$ and supports infinite weight. Pick it over Steady if heavy fish and access to rougher water are the thing blocking you rather than the minigame itself. Along the way, grab the Rowboat for 400 C$ from the Moosewood Shipwright and the GPS for 100 C$, since both cut travel time between fishing spots.
Mid-game XP rods: Wisdom, King’s, Trident, and Rod of the Depths
The Wisdom Rod is the first rod built specifically around experience. It unlocks at Level 50 and is crafted at the Ancient Archives, which you open by placing the required Fragments in their pedestals during an Eclipse. Its passive adds 5% XP for every perfect catch in a streak up to +80%, and removes 10% each time you miss one. Enchant it with Clever and it carries you through the 50 to 200 stretch.
King’s Rod at Keepers Altar costs 100,000 C$ and simply removes weight from the equation with an infinite cap and easy control. Trident Rod costs 150,000 C$ at Trident’s Temple but demands a complete Desolate Deep Bestiary and five Enchant Relics to solve its puzzle, and its 6,000 kg limit means it is a luck-and-passive pick rather than an all-purpose rod. The Destiny Rod at the Statue of Sovereignty sits in the same bracket, leaning on high luck for rarer catches.
Rod of the Depths is the real mid-game milestone at 750,000 C$. Getting to it requires 100% completion of the Vertigo Bestiary, a Depths Key to open the door, two Enchant Relics (one Abyssal and one Hexed) to open the underwater maze entrance, and any diving gear to survive the swim. It levels and earns at the same time, which is why most players park on it until Oscar is affordable.
Great Rod of Oscar: Dead Mans Tale quest and purchase route
The Great Rod of Oscar is the XP rod most accounts settle on. You need Level 250 and 2,500,000 C$ in hand, plus the Amulet from the Dead Mans Tale quest. Without the Amulet equipped, the chamber holding the rod will not open, so the quest is mandatory even if you have the cash.

If the chamber refuses to open, the cause is almost always the same: the Amulet is in your inventory but not equipped. Re-equip it before diving. From there, enchant the rod with Clever for the 2.25x XP multiplier, and add Wise for a further 1.2x if you have a Cosmic Relic spare.
Late-game XP rods: Penumbral, Pinion’s Aria, and Masterline
Past Oscar, the XP curve is gated by content rather than cash. The Penumbral Rod, tied to the Pinion area, leans on a unique minigame mechanic that pays out heavily in experience once you learn its timing.

Pinion’s Aria sits behind a longer chain. You unlock The Depths with 100% Vertigo Bestiary completion, enter Crystal Cove, place a Chaotic Enchant Relic in its pedestal to open the Underground Music Venue, then complete the Mysterious Songstress’s quests. Like Oscar, it wants a Clever enchantment, with Wise as the optional extra.
The Masterline Rod is the endpoint rather than a step. It requires Level 1000 or higher plus full completion of the eligible Bestiary and the Rod Journal, and it pays that off with 1000% lure speed, 350% luck, 50% resilience, and infinite weight. It is a completion trophy, not something to plan your Level 100 purchases around.
Note: for the actual grind, Everturn Forest and the Forsaken Shores Pond are the standard XP spots in the later stages, with Carrot Garden serving the same role earlier on.
How to confirm your XP setup is active
After enchanting, the rod’s name in your inventory carries the enchantment, so a correctly enchanted Great Rod of Oscar shows Clever attached to it rather than sitting as a loose relic. If the enchantment is missing, the relic was never consumed at Keepers Altar and needs to be applied again.
Use the menu button in the top corner of the screen to check settings and your loadout before a long session. Turning on POI headers and catch flags makes it much easier to find the right fishing spots, and setting your auto-sell preferences stops your inventory from filling mid-grind.

The through-line across all of this is that no single rod is “the XP rod” forever. Carbon gets you moving, Steady and Wisdom buy you clean perfect catches, Rod of the Depths funds the jump, and the Great Rod of Oscar with Clever is where most players’ leveling actually accelerates. Everything past that is content completion, so hold your Enchant Relics for the rod you plan to keep rather than burning them on a stepping stone.
