Onimusha: Way of the Sword — How to Get Leather Fast (Farming Method)

Where Leather actually drops, which activities pay out fastest, and what it upgrades once you have it.

Where Leather actually drops, which activities pay out fastest, and what it upgrades once you have it.

Leather is one of the clothing-side upgrade materials in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and it runs dry fast because two separate systems eat it. Wandering Kyoto hoping to trip over some is the slow way to do it. The reliable supply comes from missions.

Quick answer: Run missions instead of free-roaming, open every chest on the mission map, and kill the tougher Genma you meet along the way — mission encounters and mission chests are where Leather actually drops.

What Leather is spent on

Leather feeds the cloth side of your gear. Clothing enhancement raises your health and stamina pools, and it pulls from silk and leather materials rather than the iron used by your sword or the Genma parts used by your gauntlet. A single clothing step can cost as little as two Cotton Cloth and one Leather, but the totals stack up quickly because clothing needs ten individual enhancements to climb a single level, and the cap is level 5.

Hozuki Pouches are the second drain, and the one most players forget about until they are short. Several pouch tiers ask for Leather outright.

UpgradeLeather required
Hozuki Pouch (Default) — Level 22 Leather, plus 2 Hampen Cloth, 2 Cotton Cloth, 1 Fine Silk Cloth
Hozuki Pouch (Default) — Level 32 Leather, plus 3 Cotton Cloth, 1 Fine Silk Cloth, 1 Skeleton Hozuki
Hozuki Pouch: Regeneration — Level 22 Leather, plus 2 Hempen Cloth, 2 Cotton Cloth
Hozuki Pouch: Regeneration — Level 33 Leather, plus 2 Hempen Cloth, 3 Cotton Cloth, 1 Skeleton Hozuki

Note: the sword and gauntlet never ask for Leather, so anything you bank goes purely toward survivability and healing.

Why missions beat open-world roaming for Leather

The rarer upgrade materials are weighted toward mission content. Enemies inside a mission drop them at a noticeably better rate than the Genma you bump into while crossing Kyoto, and the chests placed along a mission route are stocked with the good stuff. If you only take one habit away from this, make it that one: when you need Leather, take a mission rather than a lap of the city.

You do not have to guess what a mission pays out either. Hover over any quest marker on the map and its rewards are previewed before you accept. For main quests, the materials on offer appear in the bottom-left of the screen the moment you open the map. Scan that before committing, and prioritise the runs that list cloth materials.

How to clear a mission for maximum Leather

Pick a mission whose reward preview includes cloth or leather materials and accept it. Treat the objective marker as the last thing you walk to, not the first.
Sweep the whole mission area before advancing the objective. Missions hide chests and collectibles off the critical path, and rushing to the marker skips most of them.
Fight the tougher enemies instead of running past them. The stronger Genma in a mission are the ones that hand over Leather, so a clean Issen on a heavy is worth more than three trash mobs.

Hold L2/LT and tap R2/RT repeatedly as you move. Oni Vision reveals hidden chests and pickups that are invisible otherwise, and it is the difference between clearing a map and thinking you cleared a map.
Only then complete the objective and hand in for the reward materials.

Chests are one-time, loose materials respawn

This is the single most useful rule for farming. A chest gives up its contents once and then it is spent forever. Materials lying loose in the world — not inside a chest — come back, so an area you already stripped is still worth revisiting.

SourceRepeatable?
Mission and world chestsNo — one pickup each
Loose materials in the worldYes — they respawn
Quest rewardsNo — per quest completion
Strong enemy drops in missionsYes, as encounters repopulate

So if you sit down at a Spirit Mirror and find yourself one or two Leather short of the next enhancement, do not wait for the next quest payout. A quick circuit of a region you have already finished will usually cover the gap.

Unlock the Oni Vision skills before you farm seriously

Three Special Skills change how much you find per lap: Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range. Together they widen the detection radius and flag treasure you would otherwise walk straight past, including the chests holding enhancement materials. Hold your Oni Stones until you can buy these rather than spreading them thin early — every hour of farming afterwards is worth more.

How to confirm the Leather actually landed

Rest at a Spirit Mirror and choose “Enhance Equipment/Abilities,” the second option in the menu once it has unlocked. Switch to clothing and check the material cost line for your next step. If the Leather requirement is now met, the enhancement is selectable and your health and stamina figures preview the increase — one clothing step, for example, moves the bonus from +370 to +390.

If the option still refuses, the cause is almost always one of two things. Either you are short on the paired material rather than the Leather itself — clothing steps pair Leather with Cotton Cloth — or the equipment category is already at level 5 and cannot take another step.

One last timing note worth planning around. Free roam stays open right up to the point of no return before the final mission, “The Clash At Rendaino.” Keep a manual save at that threshold and you can go back to mop up every region for the Leather and cloth you still need, rather than scrambling for it mid-campaign.
