Release date and platform

The game was first shown during a State of Play in June 2026 with only a broad 2027 window. That window is now locked to a single day. The launch lands weeks ahead of God of War: Laufey, which is slated for February 2027, giving PlayStation an early run of first-party releases.

What Until Dawn 2 is about

The sequel follows Dead True, a group of ghost-hunting YouTubers whose staged paranormal content becomes a real fight for survival. After an investigation at Blackwood Sanitorium turns chilling, an encounter with supernatural survivor Yoona sends the crew to Akishima Island, a remote South Pacific paradise abandoned since a luxury resort shut down in the 1970s. The island hides secrets far older and more dangerous than they expect.

It is a standalone sequel, so you do not need to have played the 2015 original to jump in. The cast and setting are new rather than a direct continuation of the Blackwood Mountain story.

Choices and the Butterfly Effect

Like the first game, Until Dawn 2 is built around player choice and branching consequences using the Butterfly Effect system. Big decisions, small character moments, and the state of relationships within the group all steer where the story goes. Every main character can live or die based on what you do.

The pre-order trailer shows several of those decision points. Owen, played by Dacre Montgomery, must choose whether to follow a signal toward his missing friend Nate or take a detour across a rickety bridge to investigate a strangely lively bar. Mina, played by Camila Senna, faces a demand from the network for a live ritual sacrifice, forcing a choice between sacrificing the crew’s chicken companion or putting herself at risk instead.

With the date now set, the countdown to January 28, 2027 begins, and pre-orders give the first concrete step for anyone planning to be on Akishima Island at launch.
