Treasure maps in The Blood of Dawnwalker sketch a landmark rather than drop a precise pin, which is why the Split Rock map trips people up. The map itself sits in a bandit camp on the opposite side of Vale Sangora from the treasure, and the payoff is a chest piece worth carrying for a long stretch of the game.

What you need before digging

Buried treasure in Vale Sangora cannot be dug up bare-handed. Coen needs a shovel in his inventory before the excavation prompt will do anything, so grab one before you make the trip north. Focus Mode is the fastest way to pick the disturbed patch of earth out of the snow once you are standing at the rock.

Digging also consumes in-game time, which matters given the game’s thirty-day clock. If you are budgeting your days carefully, save before you start so you can reload if you would rather spend that time elsewhere.

Where to find Treasure Map: Split Rock

Open the world map and head for the bandit camp marker in the southwestern part of the region. This is a standard bandit camp activity, so expect a handful of hostiles rather than a boss.

Clear the camp, then loot the bodies and containers scattered around it. The camp carries a normal spread of coin, food, and low-tier gear, and quest trackers can update while you work through it.

Find the wooden crate sitting next to the three stacked hay bales and open it. The Treasure Map: Split Rock is inside, listed in the loot window as a quest item. Take it and the sketch is added to your inventory, where it reads “Bandit’s Treasure Map: Rockfalls – Split Rock”.

Split Rock dig site location in Rockfalls

The sketch points to Rockfalls, well north of where you picked the map up. Once the map is in your inventory, the treasure location is flagged on your world map, so fast travel to the nearest shrine in that direction rather than walking the whole way.

Travel to the snowy northern stretch of Rockfalls and open the map to confirm the marked spot. The terrain here is open and white, which makes the landmark easy to spot from a distance.

Walk up to the large rock formation with a clear vertical split running through it. This is the exact landmark drawn on the bandit’s sketch, and the burial spot is right at its base.

Stand on the disturbed earth until the Dig Out Treasure prompt appears and hold the interact key. Coen digs the chest out of the snow, and the container becomes lootable in place.

Split Rock chest rewards and the Coat of Darkened Scales

The chest is a mix of one genuinely strong piece of armour and filler. The Coat of Darkened Scales is the reason to make the trip.

Equip the coat straight away from the inventory screen unless you are already wearing something heavier. Depending on what Coen has on when you open the chest, the swap can be worth well over 200 points of armour, which is a meaningful jump this early.

How to confirm the treasure hunt is done

Looting the chest closes out the search. The journal entry tied to the map moves from “Search for the treasure” to completed, and the Coat of Darkened Scales appears in your armour list. If neither happens, you have opened a different container nearby rather than the buried one.

Two things stop the dig from starting. The first is not having the treasure map in your inventory, since the disturbed earth only becomes interactable once the hunt is active. The second is not carrying a shovel, which produces a prompt telling you a tool is required instead of beginning the excavation.

Note: the X drawn on a bandit’s sketch is deliberately rough across all of these hunts, so trust the landmark in the drawing rather than trying to line up the X with the terrain.

Split Rock is one of ten treasure maps scattered across Vale Sangora, alongside Laslea Glen, Briar Sloughs, Tantari Woods, Boars Back, Riverbank, Pond Islet, Hidden Stash, Silver Cache, and Ancient Ruins.
