The Blood of Dawnwalker: Gheorghe, The Rabid Duke Location and Loot

Where to find the Rabid Duke miniboss, what he drops, and why the Side Gate Key matters before you use it.

Where to find the Rabid Duke miniboss, what he drops, and why the Side Gate Key matters before you use it.

Gheorghe, The Rabid Duke is a miniboss in The Blood of Dawnwalker who guards one of the more valuable quest items in Vale Sangora. Kill him and you walk away with the Side Gate Key to Greifberg Castle, which opens Brencis’s side door without any help from Father Florin and without scaling the outer wall at night.

Quick answer: Gheorghe, The Rabid Duke is at Racovitza’s Bandit Camp on the eastern edge of the map, east of Svotting City and south of St. Yvona’s Grove. Defeat him and loot his body to get the Side Gate Key to Greifberg Castle.

Racovitza’s Bandit Camp location on the map

The camp sits on the eastern edge of the region. Open the world map and look east of Svotting City, then trace down from St. Yvona’s Grove until you find the bandit camp marker. The Tomb of Vlad III is another nearby landmark that helps you orient in that corner of the map.

Select the camp on the map to read its description and set a track marker before you ride out. There is no time-of-day restriction on reaching the camp, so you can attack in daylight or after dark.

Fighting Gheorghe, The Rabid Duke

Approach the camp from the road. A nearby haunting, Destroyed Caravan, can be active in the same area, so check whether your objective marker is pointing at the spirits rather than the bandits before you commit.

Clear the bandits first if you can. Gheorghe fights alongside his crew, and the escorts add pressure while you are trying to read his swings. His health bar appears at the top of the screen once the fight starts.

Do not count on vampiric abilities carrying the fight. Powers such as Voracious Bite are gated by conditions and will simply report that they cannot be used right now, so plan around your sword and stamina.

Once Gheorghe drops, walk to his body and use the Loot prompt. The key does not enter your inventory automatically, so search the corpse before you leave the camp.

You will know the run worked when the Side Gate Key to Greifberg Castle shows up in your inventory as a quest item. That is the only drop tied to a story path.

What the Side Gate Key unlocks — and the warning that comes with it

The key opens the side entrance to Greifberg Castle, which sits at the top of a short path northwest of the Vedera Shallows Shrine. Unlike the wall climb, the side door works during the day as well as at night, and it does not require Planeshift or Shadowstep.

The important part is what happens next. Going through that door starts the ending sequence against Brencis. It is not an optional dungeon you can poke at and leave, so treat the key as a tool you carry until you are ready rather than one you use the moment you get it.

Note: Make a manual save before you use the key. Anything unfinished — Lacra’s questline, Crake’s questline, side content, Court Activities — should be wrapped up first, because the castle sequence closes the story out early.

When killing Gheorghe is worth the trip

There are three ways into Greifberg Castle, and the key is the one that has no prerequisites beyond winning a fight. Working with Father Florin means completing In the Name of the Father and finding his resistance beneath a Curious House near Svartrau’s West Gate, and that route disappears entirely if Florin is dead. The wall climb only works after dark and needs both Planeshift and Shadowstep.

Route inRequirement
Side Gate KeyDefeat Gheorghe at Racovitza’s Bandit Camp; usable day or night
Father FlorinComplete In the Name of the Father and agree to work with him; Florin must be alive
Outer wallNight only, with Planeshift and Shadowstep

Because the miniboss can be beaten shortly after the Prologue, the key is also the cleanest setup for the early Folk Hero route, where Coen confronts Brencis alone before the wider story plays out. If you would rather see the longer endings first, take the loot, park the key in your inventory, and go finish everything else in Vale Sangora.
