Mortal Shell 2: Abandoned Outpost Beacon Location and Cleanse (Big Ol’ Hole)

Where the Ruins of Mammon beacon hides, the route through Big Ol’ Hole, and every reward waiting inside.

The Abandoned Outpost beacon is one of the easiest fast travel points to walk straight past in the Ruins of Mammon. It does not show up on the map until you physically stand next to it and revitalize it, and the dungeon behind it, Big Ol’ Hole, hides its best chest behind a switch most players never press.

Quick answer: Fast travel to Outskirts of Mammon, head southeast past the bear traps and across the bridges, then take the traversal gate into the Deserted Slums and revitalize the beacon on the far side. Choose Cleanse Beacon, clear Big Ol’ Hole, flip the switch beside the growth at the bottom of the pit, loot the Accursed Stone upstairs, then cleanse the corruption and collect the Ovum.

Abandoned Outpost beacon location in the Ruins of Mammon

The beacon sits in the Deserted Slums, just south of the bone gate that links the Outskirts of Mammon to that area. It is not pre-cleansed and it will not appear as a marker until you interact with it, so you have to make the trip on foot the first time.

Use Mether’s Breath to travel to the Outskirts of Mammon beacon, which is already cleansed and available by default in this region. Leave the portal and start moving southeast into the forest.
Work your way through the trees while watching the ground. Bear traps are scattered along this stretch and roaming enemies will chase you, but nothing here needs to be killed for the beacon.
Open the map to check your heading before you commit to a direction. You are aiming for the wooden bridges that lead toward the traversal gate at the edge of the zone.

Pull up the map mid-run to confirm you are still heading southeast toward the gate.
Cross the bridges and take the gate through to the Deserted Slums. There are Webcap pickups on the path ahead, and the beacon structure is a short run beyond them.
Interact with the beacon to revitalize it. The prompt “BEACON FOUND: ABANDONED OUTPOST” confirms it, and the marker now appears on your map and in the fast travel list.

Note: The Collector, a vendor NPC, appears near this beacon only while Night Mode is toggled on, which is another reason to tag it early.

How to cleanse the beacon in Big Ol’ Hole

Resting at the beacon restores Health and Resolve and respawns nearby enemies, but cleansing it is a separate action that drops you into a self-contained mini dungeon. Big Ol’ Hole is short, has no boss, and is mostly about one switch.

Interact with the beacon and pick Cleanse Beacon from the menu. The other options here handle levelling up, equipment, Mether’s Pulse, and the return to Marrow Keep.

You spawn in a pale stone corridor. Smash the altar in the first chamber for 1000 Coins, then follow the stairs down to the elevator platform and pull the switch to descend.
Step off the elevator and stop at the edge of the large chamber. Do not drop into the hole yet. An Armed Knave with a halberd is waiting near the rim, so deal with it first, then break the wooden crates on the right and check the growth behind them for Laterite.
Take the stairs on the left and kill the second Armed Knave, this one carrying a greatsword. Glowing white totems in this area can also be destroyed for Gloom and a Latent point.

Now drop into the pit. A Tarred Vestige and two Mycellian Skulks are waiting at the bottom among the skeletons. Clear them, then check the growth behind them for a second Laterite.
Look to the right of that growth for a wall switch and press it. The message “A gate has lifted” confirms it worked, and a barred doorway upstairs is now open.

The raised gate upstairs opens once the switch beside the growth in the pit is pressed.
Climb back up the stairs and walk through the raised gate into the room behind where the first Armed Knave stood. Open the chest inside to claim the Accursed Stone tarstone.
Head to the shrine room and hold the prompt on the dark pillar to Cleanse Corruption, then choose Collect Ovum. Confirm the teleport and you return to the beacon.

Big Ol’ Hole rewards and the Accursed Stone

The dungeon is one of the smaller beacon runs in Mammon, and the payout matches that. The Accursed Stone is the only unique item.

RewardWhere it comes from
Accursed Stone x1Chest in the gated room, opened by the pit switch
Ova x1Collected at the corrupted pillar
Glimpse x1Granted when the beacon is cleansed
Laterite x2Growth behind the crates, and the growth at the bottom of the pit
1000 CoinsAltar in the first chamber
Gloom and LatentGlowing totems and enemies throughout

The Accursed Stone is a Level 1 tarstone. It infuses your sidearm with Curse and consumes 20 Resolve each time you use it, so it pairs best with a shell that generates Resolve quickly.

How to confirm the beacon is cleansed

The moment the teleport finishes, the screen reads “BEACON CLEANSED: ABANDONED OUTPOST” alongside the Glimpse award. Interacting with the beacon again now shows Enter Beacon rather than Cleanse Beacon, and the extra menu functions such as Level Up, Change Shell and Equipment, Mether’s Pulse, and Return to Marrow Keep are all available. Cleansed beacons also clear the corrupted growth that was blocking loot nearby.

If the cleanse does not seem to register, the usual reason is leaving the dungeon without holding the prompt on the corrupted pillar and accepting the Ovum. Grabbing the Accursed Stone chest alone does not complete it.

Abandoned Outpost is one of 49 beacons in the game, 46 of which can be cleansed, and none of them are missable. If you skip it now, you can come back after the final boss during free roam and finish it before starting New Game+.
