The Spinning Wheel and the Spinning Machine are two crafting stations the Hunter builds for turning Flax, Plant Fiber, and wool into Linen, String, and Wool. Each one unlocks through a different trigger, and the Spinning Machine depends on the Spinning Wheel, so the order matters.
Quick answer: Pick up the Loom during the Hunter’s Loom For The Hunter quest to unlock the Spinning Wheel, then pick up Raw Wool to unlock the Spinning Machine. Craft both at the Hunter in a sheltered spot.
What the two stations do
The Spinning Wheel is described in-game as “A workstation that weaves Flax into Linen in a much more effective way.” The Spinning Machine reads: “This spinning machine can refine wool and is more effective at producing string and linen.” The Hunter needs a sheltered spot to craft both.
For the Hunter’s quest Loom For The Hunter, travel to the Weaver’s Cottage in East Lapis and collect the Loom. Once collected, the Loom makes the Spinning Wheel recipe available through the Hunter.
Open the Hunter and craft the Spinning Wheel in a sheltered spot. The Spinning Wheel takes 2 Wood Logs, 2 Wood Planks, 3 Fossilized Bone, 2 Bronze Bars and 5 Nails.
Install the Spinning Wheel at your base. The quest Using The Spinning Wheel explains what it does: “The Hunter explained that a Spinning Wheel can be used to create linen and string in more cost-effective ways. Craft a Spinning Wheel at the Huntress and place it to enable more cost-effective crafting options.”
Pick up Raw Wool with the Hunter in your base. This unlocks the Spinning Machine recipe and starts the quest A Spinning Machine For The Hunter, which reads: “The Huntress needs a Spinning Machine to refine raw wool. Craft a Spinning Machine with her to proceed!”
Craft a Spinning Wheel first if you do not already have a spare one. The Spinning Machine consumes a finished Spinning Wheel as one of its ingredients.
Open the Hunter and craft the Spinning Machine in a sheltered spot. The Spinning Machine takes 3 Conifer Logs, 5 Metal Scraps, 1 Linen and 1 Spinning Wheel.
Place the Spinning Machine in your base to start the wool refinement process. The quest confirms the next steps: “You’ve crafted a Spinning Machine. Now place it in your base to enable the wool refinement process! After that, you should create refined wool for warm padding kits and better armor!”
Once it is placed, the Spinning Machine refines Raw Wool into Wool, which the Hunter uses for Warm Padding. The final quest step puts it plainly: “The refined wool can be used to craft warm padding kits. These kits are essential for crafting warmer gear. Craft warm padding kits with the huntress to proceed!”
