Once Human: How to Unlock Food Buff Recipes and Increase Damage

Where cooking recipes come from, which buffs raise damage, and how to recover the ones you missed.

Where cooking recipes come from, which buffs raise damage, and how to recover the ones you missed.

Food in Once Human is a damage system, not a hunger system. Eating a cooked dish applies a timed buff, and the strongest ones raise weapon damage, crit damage, weakspot damage, or status damage by double digits for 30 minutes at a time. A character running the right dishes clears content noticeably faster than the same character running none.

Quick answer: Recipe formulas are physical pickups. Walk over the paper item in the open world to learn it permanently on your account, or unlock the seasonal ones through the Tech Tree. Missed open-world formulas can be bought with Old Currency from traders in Deadsville and Camp Igloo.

The three ways a food recipe gets unlocked

Every dish in the kitchen menu arrives through one of three routes, and the route decides whether you keep it after a wipe. This is the single most important thing to understand before you spend hours hunting formulas.

SourceHow you get itKept after a season ends?
Open-world explorationPick up the formula item where it spawns in the worldYes — permanent, account-wide
Tech TreeSpend Tech Tree points during the seasonNo — must be unlocked again each season
Visional RedemptionBuy with challenge currency from the Challenge ShopYes, once purchased

Some Tech Tree dishes are scenario-locked rather than universal. All-Weather Stew, Iced Mint Tea, and Spicy Sizzling Meat sit in the Exclusive Tech Tree, which only appears in the Endless Dream and Way of Winter scenarios. If you are playing a different scenario, those three are simply not available that season.

Finding open-world formulas with Spacetime Scan

Recipe papers sit on kitchen counters, diner tables, workshop crates, and bar tops inside named settlements. They are small and easy to walk past, which is why Spacetime Scan matters. The scan pulses outward and outlines interactable items through walls, including recipe formulas, so you can sweep a building instead of checking every surface by hand.

Fast travel to the settlement or point of interest that holds the formula and get inside the main building. Most recipes are indoors, on a counter or a table near the room’s cooking area.
Trigger Spacetime Scan and watch for the highlighted outline. A learnable formula glows the same way a lootable container does, so approach anything that lights up on a flat surface.
Interact with the paper to learn it. The formula is consumed on pickup and the dish appears in your cooking menu immediately — if you return to the same spot later, the recipe panel will show the formula as already learned.

Not every recipe is buried in a ruin. Nalcott Easter Egg comes from exploring a settlement rather than a wilderness point of interest, and the bait formulas near East Blackfell Junction are sold outright by the Bait and Tackle shop.

Which dishes raise damage

Combat buffs run for 30 minutes and are picked to match your build, not stacked at random. A crit-based frost build wants different food than a shrapnel build.

DishBuff effect
Shattered BreadWeapon DMG +25% (all weapons)
Bone-In Deviated SausageDMG against bosses +15%
Stardust Pumpkin SaladCrit DMG +15%
Stargazy PieCrit DMG +25% while Energy is full
Assorted Canned FruitWeakspot DMG +25% while Sanity is above 80%
Mixed Fried Hot Dog+20% damage to targets marked by The Bull’s Eye
Honey Glazed MeatCrit Rate +15% against enemies in a Frost Vortex
Whimsical DrinkStatus DMG bonus +25%
Ginger Poppers / Canned MeatShrapnel DMG +10%
Shellfish MeatEnemies hit gain 5% vulnerability for 10s
Sparkling Pumpkin SoupPower Surge DMG +10%
French FriesWeapon DMG +20% during Fortress Warfare
Roulette DumplingsRandom +15% DMG vs elites, bosses or Deviants
Safety SandwichDamage taken from other players -20%

Roulette Dumplings deserve a note. The roll can land on a 150 Sanity penalty instead of a damage bonus, but during the Lunar Oracle every listed effect applies at once, which makes it far more reliable in that window.

Chef class and Chefosaurus multiply what you already have

The Chef class lets you hold multiple food buffs at the same time instead of overwriting one with the next, and it supplies free ingredients so you are not farming crops between every run. That stacking is where the large DPS gap between a fed and unfed character comes from.

Chefosaurus is a Deviation you place at your base. With it deployed, the positive effects on dishes you cook are strengthened. It changes nothing about which recipes you own, so treat it as a multiplier you set up once and forget.

Ingredient quality also matters. The same Bacon Burger cooked with Pristine Bear Meat carries Max HP +15% and a 20% larger bonus effect, while the plain Raw Meat version carries no secondary bonus at all. Cook with the best cut you have.

Recovering recipes you missed

Skipping a region does not lock you out. Exploration formulas you never picked up are sold by traders, and past seasonal dishes come back through the Challenge Shop.

Buying formulas with Old Currency

Collect Old Currency. It drops from storage crates scattered across the world, so it accumulates naturally while you loot buildings for anything else.
Travel to Deadsville or Camp Igloo and open the trader’s stock. Both settlements carry recipe formulas alongside their other goods.
Purchase the formula and learn it from your inventory. It behaves exactly like a world pickup once learned, meaning it stays with your account.

Redeeming past seasonal foods

Summon your companion in the open world.
Pick “Open Challenge Shop” from the interaction wheel that appears.
Switch to the Visional Redemption tab. Dishes tied to earlier Visional Wheels live here, including Lunar Wheel items such as Lunar Gummy, Roulette Dumplings, Surprise Spring Roll, and Unusual Braised Meat, plus Gravity Wheel items like Fluffy Sweet, Layered Galaxy, Starry Bubble Tea, and Starry Pudding.

If a dish is not in either shop, the online trading system is the last route. Other players list cooked food and ingredients there, so you can buy the finished buff even without owning the formula.

Confirming a buff is active

After eating, a named buff icon with a countdown appears on your status bar. If nothing appears, the usual reasons are narrow. The dish had no combat effect to begin with, the buff you just ate replaced one you were already running because you are not playing Chef, or the condition attached to it is not being met — Stargazy Pie only grants its crit bonus while your Energy is full, and Assorted Canned Fruit only applies above 80% Sanity.

Durations are long enough to plan around. Most combat and gathering buffs last 30 minutes, survival buffs like Cooling Touch and Pleasant Warmth run a full hour, and Stardust Tea’s Energy and Hydration top-up holds for two hours. Cook a batch before a Silo or boss run rather than mid-fight, and the buff window will comfortably outlast the content.
