Every key, the Rigoz fight, and the two legendary items hidden in the ruins under Carpenter’s Row.

A Hero’s End is the side quest where Father Florin sends Coen into a forgotten temple complex beneath Svartrau City to prove himself. The payoff is a legendary chestpiece, a legendary sword if you prepared properly, and a way into Greifberg Castle that skips the walls entirely. It is also missable, so it is worth doing before the story clock runs down.

Quick answer: Take the Ancient Key from the barrel beside Father Florin in his Altenmarkt hideout, clear the ancient ruins under Carpenter’s Row, kill Rigoz, the Betrayed Hero, loot the Ancient Hero’s Armour from the tomb behind him, then return to Florin to close the quest for 250 XP.

The journal runs six objectives, opening with “Talk to Father Florin when ready” and ending with “Leave the ancient ruins.” Nothing in the chain is optional except the mural, and that one is worth stopping for.

Grab the Stone Key from the Cathedral Treasury first

One of the two legendary items in the ruins sits behind a locked chest, and the key for it is nowhere near the dungeon. If you head underground without the Stone Key, you will have to walk all the way back.

Go to Svartrau Cathedral during the day and speak to the young acolyte near the main entrance. Ask him to open the storage room, which costs 1 Time Segment and hands over the Treasury Key.
Cross the courtyard to the northern garden and use the Treasury Key on the Treasury building opposite the cathedral.
On the ground floor, push the bookshelf aside to reveal a hidden ladder, climb down into the cellar, and open the hatch. Switch on Focus Mode so the interactive objects light up.
Take the Stone Key from the stone in front of the cross. While you are down there, sweep the rest of the building for the Recipe for Potent Vitality Balm, the Recipe for Potent Balm of Fortitude, the Recipe for Powder of Sharp Mind, and a Phial of Xanthe’s Blood, a legendary consumable that teaches the Blood Surge ability outright.

How to get the Ancient Key from Father Florin

Florin’s hideout sits behind a building in Altenmarkt. Enter through the rear doorway, drop into the basement, and follow the passage into the inner chamber where he and his followers are waiting. The ruins door needs the Ancient Key, and there are three ways to end up holding it.

ChoiceWhat happens
Agree to the trialFlorin hands you the Ancient Key and stays alive. Returning after the trial unlocks the Greifberg Castle knock sequence.
Kill FlorinHe drops the Ancient Key, but you fight his recruits and lose the castle shortcut permanently.
Refuse and walk outFlorin keeps the key. You can come back and accept later, up until the coronation deadline.

There is also a shortcut worth knowing. The Ancient Key sits on a barrel next to Florin, so you can simply take it and open the ruins without agreeing to anything. That gets you the loot, but only the finished trial and a friendly Florin get you the castle route.

Route through the ancient ruins to the Ancient Hero’s Armour

The dungeon is mostly linear with a few side corridors holding the good loot. Expect undead, dogs, and Kobolds throughout, and use the shrine near the entrance to shift the time of day or spend ability points before you commit.

Unlock the large door with the Ancient Key and squeeze through the narrow gap beyond it. Follow the stairs down past the statue and slip through the crack in the wall behind it.
Loot the corpse just inside for the Blood-Splattered Note, which contains a rough map of the complex.
The next room triggers the Ancient Guardian. He only throws basic sword swings, so read the direction of each attack and block accordingly rather than trading hits.
Search the chest and the nearby body afterwards. One of them holds the Letter From Florin, addressed to Luben, and it is the evidence you can throw back at the priest later.

Head left until you reach the chamber with a pit glowing green from below. Use Planeshift, or Shadowstep if that is the ability you have slotted, to drop in without taking fall damage, then work your way across the cavern.
Clear the Hive Kobolds guarding the small room at the end and use the Stone Key on the locked chest. That opens up The Hand of Fate, a legendary shortsword built around Witchcraft cooldown and damage plus Activation Charge restoration, alongside the Ancient Hero’s Ring.
Check the shallow pit with the ladder next to the room and pick up the Old Key. Climb out and use it on the wooden door, which links straight back into the main temple complex so you skip the Kobold room on the way out.

Push on through the connecting rooms and take out the Fallen Witch. The health bar looks alarming, but she fights like a standard enemy, so watch her swings and punish the gaps.
Keep Focus Mode running as you clear the undead and dogs in the lower halls. One of the walls carries a strange mural, and inspecting it hands you the Decrepit Key and starts the Champion of Old side quest.

Follow the path to the long corridor filled with red mist. It is impossible to miss and it leads directly into the main chamber and the boss.

How to beat Rigoz, the Betrayed Hero

Rigoz is a miniboss surrounded by slow-moving undead, and the fight is decided by whether you let him heal.

Sprint at him the instant he spawns and keep swinging. He stunlocks easily in the opening seconds, which is enough to take roughly 40 percent off his health bar before anything else reacts.
When the specters around him start moving, back off and let them shamble toward you. They are slow, so a few steps of distance buys plenty of room.
Rigoz will try to heal in that window. Close the gap again immediately and stunlock him to interrupt it, then repeat the cycle until he goes down.
Open the golden chest in the tomb behind him for the Ancient Hero’s Armour, a legendary heavy chestpiece with human health restoration, Witchcraft ability damage, bonus damage against supernatural enemies, and Activation Charge restoration. A Recipe for Potent Balm of Fortitude is in there too.
Check the second chest in the chamber before you leave. It holds a skill manual, so grab it while you are standing next to it rather than walking back later.

Leaving the ruins and confronting Florin

Squeeze through the gap on the southern side of the boss arena and loot the corpse for the Simple Key. Climb the stairs next to it and unlock the door at the top, which drops you back at the start of the ruins instead of forcing a full backtrack.

Walk back to Father Florin and tell him the trial is done. If you picked up the letter, Coen can raise the blackmail of Luben during the final conversation. You know it registered when the journal flips A Hero’s End to complete and awards 250 XP, and Florin explains the secret knock that opens the Greifberg Castle courtyard. That route lets you walk into the citadel alone during the day rather than scaling the walls after dark.

Note: the Champion of Old quest can wait. When you are ready, follow its map marker, cut through the vines for 3 Time Segments, loot the room, and inspect every mural inside. That summons Erkas the Repenter, a Forgotten Warrior type who drops Erka’s Sword.

Common reasons the quest fails or the loot is missed

  • The coronation deadline passes. A Hero’s End has a failure ending, and once it triggers the ruins under Carpenter’s Row stay closed.
  • You go in without the Stone Key. The chest holding The Hand of Fate and the Ancient Hero’s Ring stays locked until you fetch it from the Cathedral Treasury.
  • You kill Florin. The armor and the legendary sword are still yours, but there is nobody left to hand over the Greifberg Castle knock sequence.
  • You skip the mural. Champion of Old and the Decrepit Key never appear, so Erka’s Sword stays out of reach.
  • You arrive underlevelled. The undead and Kobolds hit hard below level 15.

Done properly, one trip under Carpenter’s Row nets a legendary chestpiece, a legendary shortsword, a ring, a skill manual, and a quiet way into the endgame fortress. That is a strong return for three time units, and it is worth spending them well before the deadline closes the door.
