Valheim leaves Early Access with its 1.0 build on September 9, 2026, and the update goes live at the same moment everywhere rather than rolling out region by region. The launch opens the Deep North, the game’s final major biome, and brings the Viking survival game to two new platforms.
Quick answer: Valheim 1.0 unlocks at 6 AM PDT on September 9, 2026 worldwide. Convert that to your local time using the table below, then wait for the roughly 4.3 GB download to install before you can enter the Deep North.
Release time: September 9, 2026, 6 AM PDT (1 PM UTC)

Release status: Confirmed for September 9, 2026
Iron Gate Studio confirmed the date on June 7, 2026, ending a five-year Early Access run that began on February 2, 2021. The 1.0 version releases simultaneously across all regions, so the countdown above tracks the single global unlock rather than a staggered rollout. You can verify the launch on the official Valheim site.

Download size and platforms
The update weighs in at around 4.3 GB, which is modest for a full release. The 1.0 launch is also a platform launch. Alongside the existing versions, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 join the lineup on day one, and Iron Gate has confirmed full crossplay across every platform, so PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2 players can share the same world.
| Platform | Status at 1.0 |
|---|---|
| PC (Steam), Linux, Mac | Available |
| Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S / Game Pass | Available |
| Mac App Store, Humble Store | Available |
| PlayStation 5 | New at launch (Sept 9) |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | New at launch (Sept 9) |
Old saves, new worlds, and mods
You can continue an existing pre-1.0 save file and still receive the update, so returning players do not have to start over. That said, Iron Gate suggests a fresh world for the Deep North, mostly because the new achievement system starts tracking statistics only from the moment you install 1.0. If an achievement requires killing a specific creature you already defeated on an old save, you would need to kill it again.
Mod support continues after the game leaves Early Access. Some existing mods may misbehave until they are updated for the 1.0 changes. Note that crossplay and BepInEx mods cannot run together on the same server, since console clients cannot install those mods. Keep a server Steam-only for a heavily modded run, or run vanilla to include console friends.

What the Deep North adds
The Deep North is a large, snow-covered biome that fills out the northernmost stretch of the map, completing the progression that runs through the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, and Ashlands. Iron Gate describes it as holding more than two biomes’ worth of new content, spread across dense frozen forests and vast abandoned villages where ghosts of former inhabitants still wander.
Two dungeon types anchor the exploration. The Winding Tunnels are reached through openings in large village houses, while the Gates of Mörkhalla sit inside fortress-like structures and require a key to enter. New enemies include the frozen-north Gammeltrolls, the hostile Elaking, Eyeless Ones, and the Shapeless Pulp, and creatures such as tamable Seals and rideable Moose round out the wildlife.
New gear ties into the biome’s materials. Bloodgold is the Deep North metal, smelted from Petrified Tissue, and Timberwood is its wood tier. A full set of Nord-tier weapons covers every class and is crafted from Bloodgold using moulds found in the Winding Tunnels. Traversal tools include a Grappling Hook from the Mistlands and a Shovel for clearing deep snow, and the update also brings expanded inventory space, an overhauled crafting menu, new cinematics, and performance work aimed at smoother large builds and fewer loading-zone stutters.

How to know the update installed
Once the download finishes on your platform and the client launches on version 1.0, you can head straight for the Deep North without waiting for any separate unlock. Reaching the biome requires sailing north, and Ember Charges are needed to break the ice sheets along the Deep North shore, so prepare a longship and stock up before you set out.
