Most tactical items in Once Human are read at face value: a grenade explodes, a turret shoots, a cloak hides you. A handful of them behave in ways the item text never spells out, and those side effects are what let you skip laser traps, walk out of a fight without dying, or start a boss encounter with your kill-triggered buffs already running.
Quick answer: Empty your melee slot and swing in mid-air to teleport forward through Silo Alpha’s laser grid, and destroy your own Sticky Ice Crystal right before a boss so “on-kill” buffs are already active when the fight starts.

Add to Google Preferences →Mid-air movement: melee teleport, Floating Aerogel, and Aero Leap
The melee teleport costs nothing and is the single most useful movement trick in the game. Unequip your melee weapon so the slot sits empty, jump, then attack while airborne. Your character lunges forward a fixed distance, which is enough to cross the security laser lines in Silo Alpha without setting them off on the way to Sergeant Major Dutch III – S0012.

Floating Aerogel builds a small gas platform under you that holds your weight for a few seconds, and it is crafted at the Supplies Workbench. It is event-gated rather than universal, so treat it as a tool for Gravity Abyss and Starfall Inversion runs where the floor drops away or gravity stops behaving normally. Throw it while falling, land on it, then chain to the next one.

Aero Leap fills the horizontal gap. It is a mid-air dash crafted from Atomic Snail deviation materials, and it is the cleanest way to clear obstacles that a jump plus glide will not reach. Pair it with Floating Aerogel and you can hold a position in the air far longer than the game normally allows.
Dropping combat: Spectral Cloak, Transformation Cookie, and Waste Bin
Three items solve the same problem from different angles, which is getting enemies to forget you exist. The Spectral Cloak is the long one at 120 seconds of stealth, crafted at the synthesis bench after you unlock it on the Tech Tree at Tech Level 12. The catch is that it applies once you are out of combat, so it is for approaching an area or leaving one, not for escaping mid-fight.
The Transformation Cookie and the Waste Bin are the escape hatch. Both disguise you as a piece of scenery, and enemies lose track of you, which drops you out of the encounter entirely. The Cookie comes from the Gingerbread House deviation, while the Waste Bin is a straight loot pickup, so most players will have the bin long before the deviation. Use either when a silo run goes wrong and you want to reset the room instead of dying to it.

Tip: you can tell the disguise landed because enemies stop firing and reposition, and your health stops taking damage. If they keep shooting, you were still tagged when the effect started.
Pre-fight setup: Sticky Ice Crystal and Portable MG Turret
The Sticky Ice Crystal comes from the Ice Pot deviation, which needs 100 deviation power to run. Its obvious job is cooling the area around you in heat zones such as Fire Throat. The hidden one matters more: place a crystal, shoot it yourself, and the game registers the destruction as a defeat. Any buff on your build that keys off getting a kill is now live before the boss has even spawned in.

The Portable MG Turret is stronger than its damage line suggests because it copies attributes from the weapon you have equipped when you deploy it. That means it can also trigger Unstable Bomber, turning a stationary gun into a source of your build’s proc damage. Charges are limited to five uses, you can only have three turrets out at once, and placing them on raised surfaces or walls keeps enemies from shooting them down quickly.
Throwing Dagger: elite kills, boss shields, and animation cancels
Throwing Daggers do three unrelated jobs. During invasion events, certain elite enemies die outright to a single dagger regardless of how much health the bar shows. Against bosses, a dagger opens up the mutation vulnerability that lets you break through a shield phase. And in melee, throwing one cancels a katana’s attack animation, which lets you cut a slow swing short and reposition or chain into the next input.

Team and scouting utility: Space Twister, Telescope, and Football
Space Twister is the closest thing to an on-demand teleport for a squad. Place it, pick a teammate, and they arrive at your coordinates without a run to a teleportation tower. You need Spatial keystone materials from the Space Turner deviation, and the item itself is made at the Supplies Workbench.
The Telescope replaces the usual habit of pulling out a sniper rifle purely to use its scope. It gives you the same long-range magnification while your combat loadout stays exactly as it is, which is useful for reading an area before you commit to it.
The Football is the odd one and the most efficient. Throwing it at a wild animal stuns the target, and a stunned animal can be tamed on the spot instead of chased. It works on enemies as a short interrupt too, but taming is where it saves the most time.
Why these tricks fail
Almost every failure comes down to one unmet condition rather than bad execution.
- The melee teleport does nothing if a melee weapon is still equipped. The slot has to be empty.
- The Spectral Cloak will not start while you are still flagged as in combat, and it needs the Tech Tree unlock at Tech Level 12 before you can craft it.
- The Ice Pot deviation stops producing Sticky Ice Crystals if your deviation power drops below 100.
- Turrets stop deploying once you hit five uses or already have three on the field.
- Floating Aerogel platforms only form during the events they are tied to, not in the open world at any time.
- Deviation-based items need the matching deviation stored in an Isolated Securement Unit and given time to generate materials before you can craft anything.
The pattern worth taking away is that the best tactical items in Once Human are not the ones with the biggest damage numbers. They are the ones that change what state you are in, whether that means leaving combat, counting a kill early, or standing somewhere the game did not plan for you to stand.
