Your character starts with an 8×4 grid that holds 32 items, and for most of Valheim’s history the only thing you could stretch was carry weight, not the number of slots. The Deep North update changes that. You can now buy two permanent upgrades that add a full row apiece, taking the grid to 8×6 for a 50% jump in space.
Quick answer: Defeat Moder in the Mountains to unlock Wider Pockets, then defeat the Queen in the Mistlands to unlock Deeper Pockets. Buy both from Haldor for 1,000 gold coins each.
Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets requirements
Each upgrade is gated behind a specific boss and paid for in gold. You cannot skip ahead. Wider Pockets must come first because it is tied to Moder, a Mountains boss, while Deeper Pockets is tied to the Queen deeper in the progression.

How to confirm the upgrade worked
After each purchase, open your inventory and count the rows. A completed Wider Pockets buy shows five rows, and adding Deeper Pockets brings it to six. Both changes are permanent, so once a row appears it will not disappear.
If the upgrade is not listed at Haldor, the boss requirement has not been met. Wider Pockets stays hidden until Moder is dead, and Deeper Pockets stays hidden until the Queen is dead. Gold alone does not unlock them.
Extra slots do not raise carry weight
The two rows only give you more places to put items. They do not increase how much weight you can haul. To carry heavier loads you still rely on the Megingjord belt, and stamina support like Mead of Troll endurance remains just as important.
None of this is mandatory. Players cleared the Ashlands and every earlier biome on the default 32 slots long before these upgrades existed. Think of Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets as a comfort feature that cuts down on trips back to base, which matters most in resource-heavy regions like the Ashlands and the snowy Deep North. Once the relevant bosses are down, you can pick them up whenever you have gold to spare.
