Surtling Cores are the gate between hand tools and real metalworking in Valheim. Until you have five of them, you cannot build a Smelter, which means no Copper, Tin, Bronze, or Iron bars. The cores glow red, weigh 5 each, stack to 10, and do pass through portals, so hauling them home is not the problem. Finding them is.
Quick answer: Clear a Burial Chambers dungeon in the Black Forest and take the cores off the glowing red stands inside. Five cores plus 20 Stone, placed near a Workbench, builds the Smelter.
Get Surtling Cores from Burial Chambers in the Black Forest
Burial Chambers are the earliest reliable place to pick up cores, and they sit inside Black Forest biomes. Contents are randomized, so one chamber might hand you eight cores and the next only two. Skeletons and Ghosts inside take heavy damage from fire, so torches and Fire Arrows make the run much shorter.

Tip: Burial Chambers also hold Coins, Amber, Amber Pearls, Rubies, Feathers, and Yellow Mushrooms in their chests, so bring space for more than cores.

Once you need cores in bulk, Surtlings themselves are the steadier option. These small fire creatures spawn around fire geysers and near Runestones in the Swamp, and they also appear in the Ashlands. They throw fireballs that hurt through armor, but they die instantly in water, so luring them into a pond or a dug channel turns them into free loot and Coal.
| Surtling level | Cores dropped | Drop rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | ~50% |
| 2 | 2 | 100% |
| 3 | 4 | 100% |
Other places Surtling Cores appear
Beyond dungeons and Surtlings, cores show up in a few smaller trickles. Random chests in abandoned buildings and other biomes can hold one or two. Recycling the bonfires inside a captured Fuling Village returns cores, and destroying naturally spawned Dvergr lanterns has a chance to drop one. None of these replace a dungeon run, but they add up while you are exploring anyway.
If you are testing on your own world and do not mind cheats, open the console with F5, type devcommands, then use spawn SurtlingCore.
Surtling Core costs for the Smelter and every other recipe
Cores are consumed permanently, so plan around the totals before you start placing structures. The Smelter and Charcoal Kiln both need a Workbench in range; the Blast Furnace and Stone Oven need an Artisan Table.
| Build or item | Materials |
|---|---|
| Smelter | Stone x20, Surtling Core x5 |
| Charcoal Kiln | Stone x20, Surtling Core x5 |
| Blast furnace | Finewood x20, Iron x10, Stone x20, Surtling Core x5 |
| Stone oven | Iron x15, Stone x20, Surtling Core x4 |
| Portal | Finewood x20, Greydwarf eye x10, Surtling Core x2 |
| Bonfire | Ancient bark x5, Corewood x5, Finewood x5, Surtling Core x1 |
| Ward | Finewood x5, Greydwarf eye x5, Surtling Core x1 |
| Battering ram | Flametal x10, Surtling Core x2 |
| Dvergr lantern | Bronze x2, Crystal x1, Surtling Core x1 |
| Staff of Embers | Yggdrasil wood x20, Refined eitr x16, Surtling Core x4 |
| Firework | Place 1 Surtling Core in a lit campfire |
That last one doubles as an emergency flare. A core dropped into a burning fire launches a signal high into the sky, which is a cheap way to show other players where you are.
Confirm the Smelter recipe unlocked
Picking up your first Surtling Core triggers a new recipes notification immediately. Open the hammer’s build menu and check the crafting tab: Smelter, Charcoal Kiln, Sign, and Coal Pile all become available. If the Smelter still shows as locked, you have not actually picked a core into your inventory yet.
If the Smelter appears but will not place, the cause is almost always one of two things. You are missing the 20 Stone, or you are standing outside a Workbench’s build radius. Both are easy to spot from the greyed-out placement ghost.
The practical rhythm is simple. Sweep the Black Forest early, mark every Burial Chambers entrance you pass, and clear one whenever you have decent gear and a full stomach. That gets the Smelter and Charcoal Kiln standing. Later, when portals, wards, and a Stone Oven start eating cores faster than dungeons can supply them, move the operation to a Swamp fire geyser and farm Surtlings instead.
