Witchbrook Romance Explained: How Dating and Going Steady Work

Chucklefish has laid out how relationships function in Witchbrook, and the short version is that romance runs on a card-based confession system, freeform dates around Mossport, and a friendship track that lets you skip the kissing entirely. Eleven covenmates can be romanced, and each one becomes available on their own timeline rather than the moment you meet them.

Quick answer: Raise a covenmate’s affection through daily conversation and gifts, buy an “ask out” card at the Mossport post office to start dating, plan a date with two activities they enjoy, and once things are going well, send a “going steady” card to make the relationship official.

Eleven romance candidates, six revealed so far

The final roster is eleven romanceable covenmates. Six have been introduced publicly, and Chucklefish has said more reveals are still to come, so the remaining five names are not public. Every candidate is a fellow student or Mossport resident with their own personality, interests, and story arc that shifts across your years at Witchbrook College.

Building affection before you can ask anyone out

Relationships grow the way they do in most life sims. You spend time with a covenmate, hand over gifts, and receive gifts back. What changes the texture is how reactive the cast is. Catch someone mid-routine and they will comment on the day, and their dialogue accounts for the time, the weather, where they happen to be standing, and whatever is currently happening in their life.

Timing matters as much as effort. Characters become open to dating at different points depending on what they are going through in their own arc. A reserved covenmate will take longer to warm up than an outgoing one, and the requirements to move a relationship forward are not the same from one person to the next.

Confessing with a card from the Mossport post office

Mossport handles feelings through stationery. Every romantic milestone is triggered by buying and sending a card, and all of them are stocked at the town’s post office. The in-world explanation is a mix of tradition and mild emotional cowardice, but mechanically it means you always know exactly which item advances or ends a relationship.

Card typeWhat it does
Ask outOpens the dating stage with a covenmate
Going steadyCommits to an exclusive relationship
Break upEnds the relationship

Alongside the standard designs, the post office rotates a seasonal stock, so the same message can be delivered with a spring tulip or a Halloween jack-o’-lantern. The design is cosmetic, but it is the one place where the game lets you set the tone of a confession or a breakup yourself.

Planning a date: two activities and 200 chatter spots

Once you are dating, each outing is something you assemble yourself. You pick two different activities based on what you think your partner enjoys, then walk them there. The route is not filler. Mossport contains more than 200 date chatter spots, context-specific moments where your date reacts to whatever you have walked them past, from the jewellery shop to the college bridge to seaweed on the beach.

That chatter doubles as a hint system. If a location interests them, they will say so and effectively suggest stopping there. If it does not, they will make that clear too. Reading those reactions before you commit is the main way to steer a date away from a bad outcome.

Fable, your corvid business partner, walks you through the dating process in-game, despite having no personal experience whatsoever.

How to tell whether a date went well

The verdict lands when you drop your date off at home. A bad date is unmistakable at that moment, and a promising one can still fall apart if you picked the wrong stops along the way. A good date, by contrast, opens the door to another, and a chain of successful outings is what moves the relationship toward commitment. Relationships can also fail outright based on your choices, so being dumped is a real possibility.

Going steady and what it unlocks

After enough gifts, good dates, and consistent contact, sending a going steady card locks in the relationship. Doing so unlocks relationship privileges, sleepovers among them. How much groundwork you need before that point depends on the character. Some covenmates are open books who will let you into their homes and their secrets early, while others hold back until you have put in considerably more time.

Romance in multiplayer and the friendship-only route

In co-op, every player can date a covenmate. If two players set their sights on the same character, both can pursue them and compete for their attention until one of them succeeds in going steady, which resolves the contest.

Skipping romance costs you nothing story-wise. Every covenmate’s arc can be completed through friendship alone, including the dynamic cutscenes and bespoke animations that carry their personal storylines. You will support them through the same complex journeys without ever sending a single romantic card.

Development is in its late stages, with the final internal playtest wrapping up while localisation and console ports continue. Korean and Russian have been added to the supported languages. No release date has been announced yet, though the game is planned for 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox, and you can add it to your wishlist on the Witchbrook Steam page to be notified when it launches.
