The core upgrade is a shift from the DS presentation to 3D and widescreen. Characters are remodeled in 3D, and exploration is built to show the town of St. Mystere with more depth and detail. Cutscenes and animations run at higher resolution in a widescreen format.
| Feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Characters reimagined in 3D | The cast is rebuilt as 3D models for a more detailed look |
| More immersive exploration | The village world is presented with greater depth |
| High-resolution animations | Story scenes are redrawn at higher fidelity |
| Widescreen presentation | Visuals fill modern displays rather than dual DS screens |
The trailer shown at the event highlighted returning puzzles and the point-and-click style of investigation the series is known for. Puzzle supervision is credited to Akira Tago, author of the Japanese puzzle book series Atama no Taisou (“Head Gymnastics”) and a professor emeritus at Chiba University.
The story you’ll play through
Professor Layton, an English gentleman and archaeologist, drives to the remote village of St. Mystere with his apprentice Luke. They arrive at the request of Lady Dahlia Reinhold, the widow of the wealthy Baron Augustus Reinhold.
The baron’s will states that a family treasure called the Golden Apple is hidden somewhere in the village, and whoever finds it inherits the entire Reinhold estate. Layton and Luke search the town for clues, solving puzzles they encounter through conversations and exploration, and the hunt soon grows into a larger mystery about St. Mystere and its unusual residents.
How this version differs from earlier releases
The original launched on the Nintendo DS in Japan on February 15, 2007, and reached other regions in 2008. A mobile HD version followed years later, releasing on iOS and Android in 2018 with high-resolution graphics and a couple of new cutscenes, while keeping the same story and puzzles.
| Version | Platforms | Key change |
|---|---|---|
| Original (2007/2008) | Nintendo DS | Dual-screen puzzle adventure |
| HD for Mobile (2018) | iOS, Android | Higher-resolution graphics, minor additions |
| Remake (2027) | PS5, Switch 2, Switch, PC | 3D characters, widescreen, redrawn scenes |
The remake is the widest release the game has had, being the first to reach PlayStation and PC directly rather than through a later mobile port. Level-5 framed it as a way for returning players to revisit St. Mystere and for newcomers to try the puzzles that began the whole series.

Note: A more precise release window has not been given, so treat 2027 as the only confirmed timing for now. Level-5 says it plans to share more later.
