WARDOGS opened Early Access on Steam at 16:00 UTC on 10 September 2026 and immediately became one of the biggest launches on the platform, peaking at 337,157 concurrent players. It also became one of the least playable. Queue positions ran past 300,000, matches refused to load, and the server browser came back empty for players who did make it through.
Quick answer: Restart the game once to install Launch Stability Hotfix #1, then rejoin the login queue and leave the client running. Queue position is tracked on Bulkhead’s side, so closing the game, verifying files, reinstalling or restarting your router puts you back at the end of the line.
Why WARDOGS players cannot get past the login queue
The bottleneck is authentication, not the game servers themselves. Bulkhead has said it is being rate limited and is working directly with Valve to raise that limit to the level larger titles get. Until that happens, only a fixed number of sign-in requests can be processed per minute, which is why a queue of a few hundred thousand people drains slowly and why players who finally reach the login step sometimes get an authentication error and land back at the bottom.
WARDOGS is a 100-player tactical shooter split across three teams fighting over a control zone, with destructible terrain and a cash economy. That design needs a lot of server capacity per match, and the studio has been scaling it while the queue is live. At one point during the first evening, Bulkhead took the servers down entirely to work on the problem, and it has also cleared and reset queues to flush stuck sessions.

Add to Google Preferences →Two queues: the login queue and the server queue
Getting through the login queue is only the first gate. After you sign in, you still have to pick a server from the browser, and popular servers have their own queue because each match caps at 100 players. Players have reported waiting hours in the login queue, then waiting another ten minutes to enter a server that showed zero players in it.
The empty server browser is the other half of the problem. When matchmaking is struggling, the list either returns nothing or shows servers that reject your connection with a timeout. Refreshing does not rebuild the list if the master server is not responding, so people who fought through the queue have spent their session flying helicopters in an empty lobby instead.

Launch Stability Hotfix #1: what it changes and what you must do
Bulkhead shipped a client-side hotfix on 10 September that targets three specific launch failures: players unable to join servers, players being kicked mid-match, and extended login queue times. It is a forced update, so nobody can stay on the old build.
WARDOGS launch error codes and what they mean
Most of the codes people are seeing right now are server-side. The one meaningful exception is 1147405308, which reads like an access denied message but is a version mismatch and clears once your client updates.
| Error on screen | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| JOIN TIMED OUT — ERROR CODE: [10020501], “Failed to connect to the server in a reasonable time.” | Matchmaking could not place you. Server-side; retrying is the only option. |
| Failed to authenticate with online services (no code shown) | The sign-in service, not your account or connection. |
| 1147405308 | Version mismatch presented as access denied. Update the client and it clears. |
| 1147405309 | Account has no permission to log in. |
| 1147405300 | Cannot join any server while everyone is joining at once. |
| 1628505085 | Failed to initialize player session. |
| 1628505091 | Queue cleared, but no server will accept the join. |
| 1413677057 | Load stops with a code and no explanation. |
| Dropped back to the main screen on joining | Named in Launch Stability Hotfix #1. Restart once to collect the fix. |
How to know you are through
The queue counter disappears and you land on the login step, then the main menu. From there, a working session means the server browser returns a populated list on refresh and a join request loads you into the map rather than bouncing you back to the menu. If you reach the main menu but the browser stays empty, authentication worked and matchmaking is still the blocker.

What will not get you into a match faster
Because the failure is on Bulkhead’s side, the usual troubleshooting does nothing except cost you your place. Verifying game files, reinstalling, power-cycling your router and switching DNS all leave the queue and start it over. Crashing has the same effect, and players who crashed after a six-hour wait were sent back to a position in the low hundreds of thousands.
I wouldn’t leave the queue, I’d just stay in.
— Joe Brammer, Bulkhead CEO
Note: a flat Steam concurrent count alongside a long queue means the servers are up and full, not down. A genuine outage pulls that number down within minutes.
False bans during the launch queue
A separate problem hit players who did get through. Some were handed permanent bans without cheating, in several cases immediately after clearing the queue. Bulkhead has acknowledged that bans were issued incorrectly and is working through them alongside the access problems, so a ban message from launch day is not necessarily final.
Steam reviews and Gold Exchange prices for players who got in
Reviews slid to Mixed within hours, almost entirely on connection complaints rather than the game itself. The $39.99 Early Access build held the top seller spot on Steam throughout, which is the awkward shape of this launch: enormous demand, very little access.

The other thing players found once inside was the Gold Exchange. One gold bar cost $2,798,240 in in-game cash on 10 September, and the rate moves. The limited edition Black & Gold AK74 skin runs 30 bars, which works out to roughly 84 million cash at that rate — a long way from the $11,000-ish balances most players were carrying on their first runs.

Bulkhead has not published a maintenance schedule or a status page for WARDOGS, so there is no confirmed window for the next round of downtime. The practical read for now is simple: patches in the first weeks of Early Access will bring more forced restarts and more queue resets, and the queue itself stays the price of entry until the rate limit is raised.
