Troll Armor is the fastest real armor upgrade in the Black Forest, and it skips mining entirely. No copper, no tin, no smelter, no hauling ore back to base. You kill a handful of Trolls, pick up some bones, and walk away with a four-piece set that carries zero movement speed penalty and a sneak bonus on top.
Quick answer: Kill five normal (0-star) Trolls in the Black Forest for 25 Troll Hide, collect 13 Bone Fragments from Skeletons or Meadows burial mounds, then craft the Troll Leather Helmet, Tunic, Pants, and Troll Hide Cape at a level 2 Workbench.
Gear and food to prepare before hunting Trolls
A Troll has 600 HP at 0 stars, and it will flatten you in one or two swings in starter gear. The prep below is the minimum that makes the fight routine rather than lethal.

Note: stamina is what keeps you alive here, not armor. Two stamina foods and one health food is the setup that lets you kite a Troll for the full length of the fight.

Trolls roam the Black Forest and are hard to miss, being enormous, blue, and loud. The most reliable way to find them on demand is to locate Troll Caves, which are marked by skeletons scattered at the entrance and almost always have a Troll in the immediate area. Mark every cave you find on your map, because those spots keep producing hides.
Copper mining sites are another common encounter point. Trolls also appear during the ground-shaking raid event after The Elder is defeated, which is a free source of hide if your base can survive it.
How to kill a Troll with a bow
Trolls take 1.5x damage from Pierce, doubled to 2x on headshots, and only half damage from Blunt. That rules out clubs and maces and makes the bow the fastest kill. A Finewood Bow with Flinthead Arrows drops a 0-star Troll in roughly 15 to 20 shots depending on your Bow skill.
Open with a sneak shot from outside its awareness range for the bonus damage, then walk backward while firing. Do not sprint constantly, because you will drain stamina and get caught. Save the sprint or the roll-dodge (right-click plus space) for the moment the Troll actually starts its swing. You are briefly invulnerable at the start of a roll, so timing matters far more than which direction you go.
Fight in open ground where possible. Trolls smash trees down, and a falling trunk can kill you outright.
| Troll type | Threat | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Unarmed (rock thrower) | Throws boulders from roughly 8-20 meters, short melee reach | Easier of the two. Strafe or roll the boulders and keep firing while backing up |
| Log-wielding | Reach up to about 10 meters, heavy Chop damage to structures | More dangerous. The windup is slower, so wait for the swing and roll, and never let it reach your base |
Troll Caves offer a safer alternative. The entrance counts as sheltered, so you can place a fire and a Workbench outside for Rested and repairs, and a Troll cannot follow you out. Enter with the bow already drawn, land two or three shots, then step back through the entrance and heal. Repeat until it drops. The cave Troll does not respawn once killed.
Troll Hide drops and total material cost
Every Troll drops Troll Hide at a guaranteed 100 percent rate, so there is no luck involved. Star-level Trolls are simply worth more per kill.
| Troll level | Troll Hide dropped | Drop chance |
|---|---|---|
| 0-star | 5 | 100% |
| 1-star | 10 | 100% |
| 2-star | 20 | 100% |
Bone Fragments come from Skeletons in the Black Forest and from Viking graves in the Meadows. You need 13 for the base set, all of which go into the helmet and the cape.
| Piece | Cost | Armor (Q1) |
|---|---|---|
| Troll Leather Helmet (also shown as Troll Leather Hood) | 5 Troll Hide, 3 Bone Fragments | 6 |
| Troll Leather Tunic | 5 Troll Hide | 6 |
| Troll Leather Pants | 5 Troll Hide | 6 |
| Troll Hide Cape | 10 Troll Hide, 10 Bone Fragments | 1 |
| Full set | 25 Troll Hide, 13 Bone Fragments | 19 |
Crafting the Troll Armor set at the Workbench

Upgrade costs and how far the set carries you
Each armor piece gains +2 armor per quality level and the cape gains +1, with each tier requiring a higher Workbench level. Total weight stays at 15.0 throughout, and the movement penalty stays at zero.
| Quality | Workbench level | Total set armor | Durability (pieces / cape) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 19 | 500 / 500 |
| 2 | 3 | 26 | 700 / 550 |
| 3 | 4 | 33 | 900 / 600 |
| 4 | 5 | 40 | 1100 / 650 |
Taking everything to quality 4 costs 91 Troll Hide and 49 Bone Fragments in total. The cape alone accounts for 40 of each, which is why many players max the helmet, tunic, and pants first and leave the cape at a lower quality. Armor per material spent is far better on the other three.
Tip: helmets in Valheim never carry a movement penalty, so a Bronze Helmet paired with the Troll tunic and pants is a valid hybrid if you want more head protection. You lose the Sneaky effect, but you keep full mobility.
Troll Armor compared to Bronze Armor
| Troll Set (4 pieces) | Bronze Set (3 pieces) | |
|---|---|---|
| Armor (Q1 / Q4) | 19 / 40 | 24 / 42 |
| Movement penalty | None | -10% |
| Set bonus | Sneaky, +15 Sneak | None |
| Crafting station | Workbench | Forge |
| Total weight | 15.0 | 23.0 |
| Smelting required | No | Yes, Copper and Tin |
At max quality the armor gap narrows to two points, and every Bronze bar you skip on armor is a bar you can put into a Bronze Axe, Bronze Pickaxe, or a weapon instead. That is the practical case for Troll Armor beyond the sneak bonus.
Upgraded to quality 3 or 4, the set stays competitive through the Swamp, where dodging Blob attacks and outrunning Leeches matters more than raw armor. Once you reach the Plains it falls behind, but by then you are already carrying enough hide from raids and cave clears to have maxed it anyway.
