Lowtown is where Marvel’s Wolverine stops being a rescue mission and turns into a grudge match. Essex has the Helix Engine running over the district, Sentinels are dropping into the streets to hunt dormant mutants, and Logan spends the whole stretch cutting cages open before Victor Creed finally lands on him. The fight that follows is not a straight slugfest — it breaks in half and dumps Logan into a memory from thirty years ago.

Quick answer: Sabretooth tackles Logan off the rooftop the moment Essex finishes explaining his X-gene graft. Survive Victor’s claw rushes, then clear the red phantoms in the mindscape to end the encounter.

What triggers the Sabretooth ambush in Lowtown

This mandatory battle is separate from exploration: it triggers a rooftop cutscene in Lowtown right after Logan corners Essex for the second time. During the scene, Essex reveals that his spouse carried the mutant gene, then says he transplanted that X-gene into his own body to acquire powers. Victor interrupts him and knocks Logan from the roof.

Everything before that rooftop is the approach: a Reaver fight in Essex’s high-rise, the drop into Lowtown outside Tyger Tiger’s bar, and a long sweep through the Hotel Royale and the docks to free caged civilians. Clear that and Victor shows up on his own schedule.

Clearing the Lowtown cages and the Hotel Royale

Fight your way out of the high-rise office after the VTOL smashes through the window. Reavers flood the floor while Mystique leaps onto an escaping aircraft and Jean pulls a second one down telekinetically. The objective marker then points you at Lowtown.
Hold the street outside Princess, Tyger Tiger’s bar. Reavers hit the building first, then an MK1 Sentinel drops in to hunt mutants. Jean assists by lifting and dropping vehicles onto crowds, so let her clear space while you focus on the Sentinel’s legs.
Follow the rooftops and power lines with a run and parkour route to the Hotel Royale. Yellow diamond markers and distance numbers show the way, letting you sprint past the patrols below without stopping to battle them.
Get onto the hotel balcony, defeat the Reavers stationed there, then enter the smoke-filled building. Inside, Sentinels and Reavers fight alongside civilians in the room. During the battle, Essex appears and insists that he does not kill indiscriminately before teleporting away.
Rip open the metal cages holding the captured civilians. There are several across the route — one in the hotel, more past the warehouse fight and out along the docks, and a final one after the skirmish by the chain-link fence. Each one is a simple prompt on the cage itself.

The opposition through this stretch is mostly familiar, but the heavier Reaver variants show up in numbers here:

  • Reaver Bruiser and Reaver Crusher — close-range heavies that soak damage
  • Reaver Hunter and Reaver Commando — mobile skirmishers
  • Reaver Master Gunner and Reaver Commander — ranged pressure and squad buffs
  • MK1 Sentinel and Helix Sentinel — the robotic units deployed by the Helix Engine

Suits and claws to equip before the fight

There is a natural break right after the bar is overrun, and it is the best moment to open the Gear menu. Logan is still wearing the white tuxedo and eyepatch of the Patch persona at that point, which is fine mechanically but leaves him in a dinner jacket for a Sentinel fight. The Ultimate Red suit — red and black armored tactical gear with a mask — is the practical swap for the street battle that follows.

By this point in the campaign most of the wardrobe is unlocked, with the counter sitting near 15 out of 16 suits crafted. Dressed Down, Leather Jacket, Old Man Logan, Classic Brown, Black Tank, Ablation, Patch, Weapon X and Team X Tactical are all selectable, and claw options run from Crescent Claws and Flat-Edged Claws to Ragged Adamantium Claws. Suits and claws are cosmetic swaps made from Materials, so spend leftover Materials freely before the boss.

Techniques worth unlocking before Sabretooth

Logan is generally around level 28 or 29 heading into Lowtown, which is usually enough to be sitting on a few unspent Technique Points. Victor’s fight rewards defense far more than raw damage, so put points into counters and crowd control rather than saving them.

Power Attack Counter, Savage Sprinter and the Overwhelm upgrades cover the three things you will be doing constantly in Lowtown — punishing telegraphed heavy swings, closing distance on Sentinels, and staying on top of grouped Reavers.

Brutal Assault is the other one worth topping up, since level two and three both land in this stretch of the campaign. Tornado Spin is the sweeping option to have equipped when a cage rescue turns into an ambush from three directions at once.

Where the points come from

Technique Points come from levelling, and the Lowtown fights hand out enough XP to push a level mid-mission. The same tree has carried you since Savage Sprinter and Stagger Leap unlocked at level 2, so anything still sitting at level one is a candidate for a cheap upgrade.

Spend everything before the rooftop cutscene. Once Victor tackles Logan, the encounter runs straight into the memory sequence and you will not get a clean shot at the menus again for a while.

Sabretooth boss fight phases

The encounter is split between an open brawl in the Lowtown streets and a scripted psychic sequence. Here is the shape of it:

PhaseSettingWhat you do
Street brawlLowtownTrade claw combos, dodge ringed attacks
The pinLowtownCutscene — Victor overpowers Logan
DreamscapeFarm, 30 Years AgoWalk, interact, follow Spark
MindscapeDark voidFight the red phantoms

Phase one: the Lowtown brawl

Victor is Logan’s mirror. He has the same rapid healing and his own claw attacks, which means chip damage achieves nothing — you need sustained pressure between his rushes. Watch the ground for the red target rings that mark his incoming heavy attacks and roll out of them rather than trying to trade. As with the game’s other bosses, timed defense is what fills the stagger bar and opens the window for real damage.

If Logan goes down, Last Stand is still available — tap the Square button repeatedly to get back up and regenerate health.

Phase two: the farm from 30 Years Ago

Victor eventually pins Logan and starts mocking him, and the screen shifts to a farm labelled “30 Years Ago.” There is no combat here. Logan’s inner voice, Spark, guides him as a purple silhouette while short objectives appear on screen — follow the figure ahead, catch up with James, wash up, fetch a pail of water from the stone well, take a seat, listen.

Work through the farmhouse and the cabin, pet the dog, and take the porch conversation with the woman who looks like Jean Grey. Following Spark’s glowing orb through the forest leads to the memory the whole sequence has been building to — the moment Essex’s control made Logan impale her on his own claws.

Phase three: the red phantoms

Control returns in a dark mindscape surrounded by red-cloaked phantoms. This is a straightforward wave fight against enemies that have no real weight behind them, scored by a voice repeating “Remember who you are.” Keep swinging until the last one drops.

How to know the encounter is over

The confirmation is visual and impossible to miss. Once the phantoms are cleared, the Phoenix force manifests in the mindscape, Logan’s memories snap back into place, and his outfit changes from the white tank top and jeans of the memory into the classic yellow-and-blue Wolverine costume. He closes the sequence by vowing revenge on Essex.

If you are still in the tank top, the mindscape fight is not finished. The costume change is the game telling you the Sabretooth encounter has resolved and the hunt for Essex is back on.
